Can't believe you've never heard of Ella Fitzgerald!!
One of the greatest female singers of all time. Has sang with all the best singers & bands in the world.

Celine is okay but not a patch on Ella.

Sorry, can't bear Celine. and she could do with a pie or ten down her neck!
No offence meant to those who like her, each the their own and all that.

Maddiecow Report 22 Dec 2007 22:35

Sorry to be a kill joy but I cant stand her - I think I must have been one of the very few people to walk away after seeing her on stage - through the first song!

Fortunatly, she was not the act I was going to see....was a Princes Trust thing. I love strong female singers, Annie Lennox, Alison Moyet, Helen Terry, Ella Fitsgerald, Nina, Aretha, Ruby etc .... But I cant stand Celine - to me is like nails down a chalkboard.

I cannot believe you don't know Ella Fitzgterald -

"Every time we say goodbye"
"The lady is a tramp"
Manhatten
A foggy day in London town
A nightingale sang in Berkely Square
The Very thought of you
etc. etc. etc............

Mauatthecoast Report 22 Dec 2007 22:39

She's no longer with us Stray unfortunately, yes she is an 'oldie'.
Read about her on Wikipedia and you'll see how great she was........57 years singing career and 13 grammy awards!

Incidently I was fortunate to see her in the early sixties at the City Hall,Newcastle with Oscar Peterson. her mike. went off and she carried on singing and you could still hear her clearly, beautiful voice.
Can you tell I'm a fan? lol

Mau ;O)

Love Diana Ross too, but, she'll never be as good a singer as Ella

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 22 Dec 2007 22:40

you lucky thing - to have actually seen Ella

Maddiecow

Maddiecow Report 22 Dec 2007 22:41

Stray - I expect if you heard a song - you would say - oh I know that. If you have Itunes listen to a sample of her there.

Diana Ross - now there is another good one - like Tina though - retired and I expect not to be heard of again in the near future - but what a contribution to Music (and motown).

Yes Ann it was a wonderful evening. I was only 20 yrs. old and loved rock n' roll but I thought she was just magic.
Anyway age has nothing to do with music has it? :O) we all have our favourites and I like lots of different styles and have a wide collection of records, albums & Cds

Stray
I've got nearly all of Diana Ross's albums from 1960s upwards. Love her too. :O)

Maddiecow

Maddiecow Report 22 Dec 2007 22:47

I agree Mau music is one thing that can bond any ages. If they are great they are great!

JoyBoroAngel

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 22 Dec 2007 22:53

I keep saying "I want this or that at my funeral" and my son goes mad - I think it's good to choose - it's inevitable so what!! Someone started a thread on funeral songs a few weeks back but had to pull it cos it upset people - not me, I thought it was great.

Mauatthecoast Report 22 Dec 2007 22:54

I wold like to have seen Diana live in concert, but only when she was at her peak. Think she recorded some awful numbers in the eighties.

I love 'Touch Me in the Morning' and her albums with George Benson and Marvin Gaye. :O)

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 22 Dec 2007 22:55

I love all sorts of music from pop to classical - only things I don't like are rap and modern jazz, but anything else is fine - I don't class rap as music anyway

JoyBoroAngel

JoyBoroAngel Report 22 Dec 2007 22:59
