DLA (Disability Living Allowance)
DLA is an allowance that I would expect everyone with MS to receive at some level, whether they are employed or not, so firstly may I encourage anyone who has not applied for this benefit to do so. These are the definitions used by 'Decision Makers' when assessing your claim in relation to the care component. The award of DLA is based around the level of supervision and care a person needs at various times of the day and night, and the number of times and the length of time the person needs that care for. Before I carry on, can I remind you that you do not have to actually receive this care, you can, for instance, live alone and have no help at all but you must show that there is a need for it and that in an ideal world you would benefit from that help.

The care component is broken down into the level of care you require during the day and the night and the award is made on the level of care you need over a 24 hour period and is explained as follows:-

During the day -
Frequent attention [3 times or more] throughout the day in connection with your bodily functions; OR continual supervision throughout the day in order to avoid substantial danger to yourself or others.

During the night -
Prolonged [20 mins plus] or repeated [two times or more] attention in connection with your bodily functions; OR in order to avoid substantial danger to yourself or others you require another person to be awake for a prolonged period or at frequent intervals for the purpose of watching over you;

Part-time day care -
You require, in connection with your bodily functions, attention from another person for a significant portion of the day (whether for a single period or a number of periods).

Cooking test
You cannot prepare a cooked main meal for yourself even if you have the ingredients.

Bodily functions are: eating, breathing, sleeping, hearing, seeing, drinking, walking, sitting, dressing and undressing and using the toilet.

Supervision: If you need someone to be around to protect accidents to you or others. (Supervision can be passive, whereas attention is active help).

Continual supervision - Frequent or regular, so more than 3 times during the day.

Attention: What a non-disabled person would do for themselves with ease in connection with a bodily function. The attention needed must be carried out in your presence and require personal contact.

Substantial danger: Must be real, not just remotely possible but can mean infrequent or isolated incidents that could have had dire consequences. Significant portion (of the day) means at least an hour but not necessarily all at once. You can take into account the amount of disruption to the carer, not just the time spent caring.

In other words: in very simple terms, to get the highest rate of the care component you need to need physical help at least 3 times a day with bodily functions or supervision at least 3 x a day to avoid danger to yourself or others.
During the night you also need to require physical help during the night for at least 20 mins or at least 3 shorter periods or you need someone to be awake for at least 20 mins or at least 3 shorter periods to look over you.

I have a couple of peeps who are willing to help but don't want their names up. I will stick myself down as a contact with (refer) or something after my name.

I need to stress that all contact is confidential, I don't wan't to know about any contact made, unless there is no reply from someone then perhaps I can source another supporter.

With regard to research articles they will be pm'd, emailed or a link given with authorship acknowledged.

Any advice given will be from peoples' personal experiences. Please remember that your GP is your first point of reference. This thread is not a diagnostic tool! But there is nothing better than speaking with someone who has experienced an illness themselves to emotionally support a GR friend.
