It was an interesting programme but I don't think anything will ever beat the singing of Natasha Kaplinsky's cousin at the end of last week's programme. That was haunting and so moving.

Yes, Jacky I must agree with you there, that was very moving last week.

Has anyone noticed they always seem to have at least 1 celebrity whose story gets to us all.

Thanks Von, it must be the same one I should think, I haven';t looked into 'my' Neville's parents, only his chidren. I'll just have to watch the repeat and tape it so I can study the tree!

Sue Report 13 Sep 2007 23:11

Watching it I just felt that he was going through what a lot of us on GR do.

Finding out that some ancestors bent the truth and then those following them slightly built the stories up. A century or more later we find that we have do discard most of the 'history' to find the facts.

I thought it was good. Tracing the family lies LOL
We've all been through it. My gran always said my grandad must have been from Scottish stock. Why?
Because he always sang 'I belong to Glasgow'!!
He and countless generations before him came from that most gallic of places - Hampshire!!
My g grandmother from Suffolk allegedly had her first illegitimate child Maud 'up North'. The only one I found was born in Grimsby - which is 'Up North' from Suffolk LOL

for those of you have have an interest in Grimsby its next to where I live. Can do digital photos for you if you tell me what you want. There is a fishing heritage centre which is very good, so I am told ,but not actually been there myself.

If it had been me I would have looked into who Edward Stafford was even if they knew Emma was not his child instead of trying to find her connection to Sligo

Little Lost

Little Lost Report 14 Sep 2007 06:28

there is also an archive centre in Grimsby only open certain days and times and you have to book so not been there either yet as my lot dont really come from around that area. I do have a connection with Louth though

Ann

Ann Report 14 Sep 2007 07:36

I imagine Edward Stafford was Emma's stepfather, married her mother after she was born/conceived. They did not seem interested in researching the family members they did find- only in proving this link with Sligo. I would have looked into the parents Emma & Edward Stafford, and also who got more info on who the 'real' father was, I imagine John's cousin knew more about him as she had the photo of him. His g-grandmother obviously knew about him being her father- how else did she come to marry her cousin? There must have been contact with him. Personally that would have interested me more than proving some imagined link to aristocracy. I think he was more shattered about losing his claim to grandeur than his Irish connection.

I felt really sorry for him--I'm trying to solve the legend of my "cherokee" gt gt gran--the only thing is I don't believe the blarny much so if I can prove it it will be good, but if it's tosh my suspicions will be villified! I think John just so wanted to have the Irish in him that he'd, in a way closed his mind to the possibility of it being a story.
Besides, Irish family history is so difficult to trace as well, speaking for the 1/2 Irish side of me!!
