Hi Janet! I'm in the steaming metropolis itself.......NORTHAMPTON!!! Do I get the prize for being the closest???!!!! Steph :-)

Well, Stephanie, it's a toss up between you and Kaz who lives in Northampton too! Did you get tied up in the snowy gridlock on Wednesday afternoon in Northampton Town?!

Steph

Steph Report 31 Jan 2004 08:43

Was walking my 6 year old home from school. It started snowing as we left school gates, by the time we got home (5 minutes), we looked like walking snowmen!! It did take my hubby 3 hours to get from the M1 Crick to Duston, (usually 25 mins), because a lorry had jack-knifed at East Haddon, though!!!

Hi Stephanie Any relation to Geoff Bland? A friend of mine works in Rugby and lives in Moulton - it took her 5 hours to get home in the snow and 2 hours to get to work the next morning! Sue

Sorry! Loads & loads of Blands in Northampton. I'm only one by marriage, but I don't recall a Geoff in the family. Steph

Steph My daughter works in Northampton and has 19 miles to travel home last Wednesday. It took her 3 and a half hours to get out of Northampton, and half an hour to travel the final 17 miles! A friend whose daughter works at Brackmills left work at 5 p.m. and got home at 12.15 a.m. on Thursday morning! It seems that Northampton itself was the problem - not the main roads. Anyway - do you know if any of your Blands lived in East Northamptonshire? We had a family of Blands that owned a shoe factory in the village. One of the brothers owned a Kennels at Sharnbrook.

Does anyone know where Hinton In the Hedges is/was? My g'grandmother was brought up there and her father later died there. Can I thus claim a little bit of Northants? We have concrete cows here too except the real ones get painted in the colours of the farmer's favourite rugby team. BOYS!! Kia ora Marlene in New Zealand

Hi Janet, The problem in Northampton (I've been informed!) Was that everyone left work early, instead of the staggered migration that usually happens!! As for my Bland family, none from your neck of the woods. My husband's great great grandfather was from Dingley (near Mkt Harborough), but he and his family moved to Northampton when he was about 5 in 1840ish. Since then , they've all been Northampton born, bred and died!!! Steph

Hi Marlene Hinton-in-the-Hedges is in the Silverstone/Brackley/Banbury direction. Can't remember exactly, but it has a Northants postcode so you'll be fine! Sue

I'm an ex Northamptonshire-ite living in Hampshire now. Almost all of my ancestors orginated and stayed in Northants. Its makes my research relatively simple. Im in Old, Rothwell, Kettering, Easton on the Hill, Stamford, Raunds, Weekley, Rothwell....... I feel as if ive never left. I still visit my father who lives in Kettering and my 10 year old daughter would love us to move there if only for Wicksteed Park. Julie

Marlene Interesting fact about Hinton in the Hedges. Originally known as Hintone in the Domesday Book, the present name dates from the 18th century when the open fields were enclosed for sheep grazing with new hedges made of hawthorn. Hinton in the Hedges is near Brackley and close to the Oxfordshire border. Julie I'm only a mile away from Raunds! Christine I went to school in Wellingborough in the 1960's. It's changed a lot since then though, I must admit.

Janet you know me but I'll add to your thread anyway. Born in Rushden and just found a lot of my relatives I thought were from Wymington Beds were from Wellingborough ! Mum still lives in Rushden and I get down as much as I can from up here in not so sunny Lincolnshire (at the moment anyway) but don't get down enough to be able to look up records etc so rely on sites such as these and the kind folk here to help me out and they have for which I say a huge 'THANKS' Be interested in any site addresses I may not have already tried - any help in fact - to follow my Pendered line. Bless you all -Northamptonshire is a great place !! Mary

My Grandad, Arthur Tarry, was born in Northampton in 1892, left during WW1 and never went back permanently, but was always very proud of his northamptonshire roots. The names I'm researching in northants are: Tarry - Northampton, Creaton Cole - Northampton, Wrigley - Kettering Goodman -Northampton Coe - Kettering Durden - Northampton Orland/Ireland - Creaton, Teeton Farndon - Creaton Hollick - Creaton Wood - Brixworth Tee - Gretton Satchell - Gretton Carolyn

Amanada - all my relatives in Northants worked in the shoe trade, including my Mum and Dad, and my brothers step brothers. Sadly, not much a shoe trade going on there now. Anyone know of any sites that would give info on the history of the shoe trade there ? I've got history books of Rushden but would like something specifically on the boot and shoe industry Mary

My Jackson family are from Northamptonshire. I spent a year trying to trace my grandfather's birth, spending pounds on birth certificates. He doesn't appear on either the 1881 or 1891 censuses. He had a habit of giving Northampton as his birthplace, instead of Northamptonshire. Eventually I found him in Peterborough which I know is now Cambridgeshire. His father came from Peterborough but his mother came from Oundle. It is one of the few counties in this country that I haven't visited. Rosemary(Essex)
