i was looking through solar system book, and to thought venus, only it, mars & moon are the closest thing around just now. my book says; venus to the naked eye venus is a splendid object and , as the evening and morning' star' is far brighter than any celestial object except the sun and moon. |

Hi there jim My hubby is budding astronomer, and he says it could be sirius and above that it would be Procyon, Regel and Betelgeuse. Its more likely to be Sirius, Jupiter rises just about now in the East, the brightest object in the east. Venus is an early morning planet but we dont usually see it because of the sunlight. Deb X |

Dont know about that, Lynn, But there was a theory that our moon went around, the other way...... Deb he's most likely right there with Sirius, Rigel and Betelgeuse are in Orion |

I am right next to Portsmouth and it was due south of me at around 9pm. There are only 2 celestial objects visible, probably due to the slight clouding. This bright one, and a dimmer one about 30 degrees ahead of it at about the same elevation. It looks much brighter than any of the stars I have seen in Orion. |

Around 1999/2000, I was watching the Station go over, and it so happened the the shuttle had undocked a short while earlier, and the two objects went across as if they were 'on tow'.....amazing sight..... |

So Granpa, have we established what it is yet? |

No. This is one of the problems I find with the Internet that you have to know where to go to ask questions. I wish I could just Google Astronomy Questions and get through to an on-line astronomer who could answer this. There are a lot of other questions I have about all sorts of things but I don't know where to direct them. |

Tell you what Granpa, i'll personally research this question and get back to you tomorrow evening, no doubt you will already know by then anyway. |

I would say that it's either Venus ,Or Jupiter, through a telescope you can see the belts on a clear night ,and it can't be Saturn.because you would see the rings.I can't help above that because i hav'nt had a night clear enough to get mine out,so i'm jealous Jim you lucky begger.lol.Fred.ptfg.&a&g&s. |
