Well done Grampa Jim. Here's another. I'm off to watch XMen 2 in a few minutes with hubby but I'll be back to see how you are getting on. Unless of course you crack this one in the next 5 mins or so. Two men and a woman were stuck in a lift during a heatwave. One of the men had three bottles of mineral water with him and the other had five. They shared the eight bottles of water equally between the three of them Once they had been freed, the woman gave the men eight coins as payment. What is the fairest method of dividing the eight coins? Aileen xx

Mags Report 14 Mar 2005 20:55

8 bottles between the three of them is 2 and 2/3rds each The first man has three bottles - so in effect he has 'donated' 1/3 bottle to the woman The second man has five bottles so has in effect 'donated' 2 and 1/3 bottles to the woman (7/3rds) So the fairest way - assuming that all coins are to the same value is to give the first man 1 coin and the second 7 coins. I think! Magsx

Hi Mags, Are you related to Einstein? I can usually work out most of these but I couldn't get my head round that one. Here's a little nightcap for you. A man died on January 23rd yet was buried on January 22nd. Why the premature burial? Aileen

Your on the right track Karen but that's not the correct answer. Aileen

Partly right Lorraine. Not a US time zone. It has a specific name which causes the discrepancy in the dates and part of the answer lies in a compass. There almost given it away. Aileen

Winter Drawers Ever Near Report 15 Mar 2005 00:52

Yes you more or less got that Bj. If he had died in Fiji and was flown to Western Samoa for burial, he would cross the International Date Line from West to East. In effect, the date would go back one day. I'm off to bed in a minute but will leave you to ponder these easy little puzzles: If a man cannot be tried for the same crime twice, why was Edward Dukes tried six times last week for the murder of Lady Soames? ---- 000 ---- The guard of an open prison was given strict instructions not to allow any prisoner to leave the prison without release papers, or to allow any visitor into the prison without written permission from the Governor. The guard watched over a strip of land which was the only way into or out of the prison. He knew it would take at least 9-10 minutes for anyone to cross the land, and so checked it every five minutes. How did a prisoner make a successful escape despite having no release papers? Aileen

Edward Dukes and Lady Soames are characters in a play that was put on every day except Sunday?? The prisoner had noticed that there was a raised area on the land behind which he could lie when the guard made his check and he continued the escape during the next five minutes?
