My pet hates are 'surreal', and 'genre'. Legitimate words, I know, but overused in the media and it drives me mad!! What words do you dislike? Susan

someone i work with constantly uses the word 'allegedly'- it really gets on my nerves- she also sometimes says 'spiffing' ....... need i say more.................... sue.

Spiffing!?!? I can't believe anyone uses that word! I also dislike people saying 'w-o-o-onderful'. Susan

I just hate it, when anyone (even reporters on TV use the phrase) if they refer to an accident or whatever, they say 'he dropped/fell/or was pushed' to the FLOOR, when in actual fact the person may have fallen or whatever, to the pavement/ground/roadway, why oh why do they persist in saying that?? don`t they know the difference between a FLOOR and the ground!!!

There are lots of catch phrases used where I work...Yep 'allegedly' is one, but every one uses them now mainly to take the mick but it's a routine thing that has become a bit of fun. Another is 'Indeed' why do some people use it instead of Hello it's like saying Ditto, but surely you wait to someone has said hello FIRST? Puzzleing, but we've all got used to it now.

'At the end of the day' 'at the present time' 'Presently' 'we gotta talk' and I wince whenever I hear Gren(ar)da referred to as Gren(ay)da or Vietn(Am) as Vietn(Arm) and 'the police are investigating 'an incident''.

Overuse of 'perfect' especially when it's not. Seems to be the fashionable word, but used far too much. Magi

I also don't like 'at the end of the day', Joe. By the way, my hubby is watching The Edinburgh Tattoo on the TV (we're in Australia) and he told me that in a band there is always sax maniacs, sax cymbals and someone playing their own trumpet, oh and people drumming up business. Isn't that awful. Susan

My 3 teenagers favourite word (very annoying) is 'Whatever' . It seems to be their answer to everything Deborah

'Partnership' is the buzz word I hate at present. Xxxxxx & Sons working in Partnership with Yyyy County Council. No they are not. They are Road Menders contracted to do a job.

I also hate the modern 'He goes, I goes, She goes' when they mean 'Said'

Heres a word that may make some wince - BECKHAM !

Mine is when people say “handicapped” instead of disabled. Even the media use it sometimes. TC

Hi all I hate the word BASICALLY Basicallly this and Basically that I am The President of an Amature Theatre Group Someone I know is a Sound technician and he repeatedly says what you need at your Amature Theatre is basically this and basically that. He wants all the high Tech stuff which we don't want. I said to him the other day you keep saying Basically and I said thats what we want Basics not High tech stuff. That shut him up lol. 'Benchmark' Gawd I hate that, all the managers in our place try and think of new ones at every meeting, then they come and repeat them in every sentence to us minions :(( Im thinking of more..... Oh that one where people put there 2 fingers on both hands up and demonstrate speach marks ....Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Do you know what I dislike when somebody says to me me 'See you later' when they are not going to see me later it seems a daft terminology for somebody meaning they will see me in a month or 12 months. Dave

Just watching Building the Airbus and one French guy has had three sentences and in each he has said 'At the end of the day ......' (see my above). and how about 'Clearly' ? especially used by politicians when Nothing is Clear.

'season finale' seems to be being used on all channels now - why can't they just say 'last in the series'????? Sorry Ann from Sussex but I have to disagree with you. SOME parents may use 'hyperactive' as an excuse for naughtiness, but there are definitely children who really ARE hyperactive and have been diagnosed as such by clinical psychiatrists. I don't suppose you were really including them, but just wanted to make sure! Maz XX
