Im against execution anyway Pat, but I cant see what they get out of executing somebody 15 years later. People can change a lot in that time and can have many regrets. I believe that another one is planned for California shortly and Governer Arnold Swatzenegger has to the power to overule it. The Guy who is facing it now is full of recompense and writes childrens books which are very popular. Davex

Hi Dave is it not the judicial system over there that makes it take so long , they have so many reprieves and such like that people forget . But do the relatives of the murdered person forget no I think not . :-)))))))))))

I hope no one deletes what they have written it would be a shame to do that. I always feel when people take the trouble & time to add to a thread unless its rude or nasty it should not be deleted. It would be a very boring place if we all agreed on everything I have my views and you have yours I enjoy sharing them. I do believe no one can forget the horrors when someone is killed no matter who they are any innocent life is a tragedy to lose but I do feel the figures that Gwynne has put up speak volumes. I respect your views and I hope you will respect mine & everyone else's. Pat x

Saints you are entitled to your opinions! but you are just speaking hypothetically, The Death sentence has never been a deterrent and never will be! When you execute somebody you are being the same as the purpatrator, plus we also have people executed when innocent! no going back on it when they are gone is there? Dave

Saints your getting silly now, The mother of the boy who was murdered in Liverpool with an axe forgave them for their act becuase she is a Christian and not a bitter person, now that is true forgiveness 'To Err Is Human To Forgive his Divine' Dave

Hi Twizz, Sorry, but you made a mistake earlier in thinking I am against the death penalty. In fact, if someone is given a life sentence I feel that we should use all our efforts to make that sentence as short as possible. Why should a wronged Society bear the cost of keeping its Pariahs? So, to me, the Life and Death sentences would be one and the same. I do not agree with putting someone on death Row for 15 years. I find that Barbaric. regards, Jim

Pat Report 2 Dec 2005 22:24

No I don't think that Saints Alive. Wasn't Timothy Evans executed for killing his family and it was Christie who did it all long? He got a pardon, well that wasn't much good to him. There are more examples but one life wrongly taken by the State is one life too many. Pat x

Yes Pat that is a good reason not to bring back the death penalty in this country. Another reason is that the death penalty can actually lead to an increase in crime because the death penalty desensitises people to violence, and it sends the message that violence is a suitable way to resolve conflicts Particuarly true in America. If execution isn't carried out within 6 months of sentencing it's very inhumane. When I think of say 16 years ago my recollections quite hazy sometimes (although on occasions lucid) I'm sure as others mentioned they may change and come to truly repent their sins. as a Christian Country some states are quite like the 'Evil East axis of evil' they so despise. I do think, however, we are too woolley in Britain and should be more than a wee bit tougher. Jacquie

Ok David so we allow millions of people to be murdered every year in every country all over the world by not just criminals and your answer is compassion . For who the victim ?? the perpertrator,or for the rest of the people who have to suffer. As for being silly I think not I may not be able to express myself as much as I would like to but silly methinks not. :-))))))))) I was born to die not to be murdered thankyou :-))))))))))))) Yeah we will always disagree sorry

Compassion is not a limited resource. To be human is to feel compassion for victims of crimes and their families. Compassion towards the perpetrators is to be humane. Wanting to do horrible things to people who have done horrible things just perpetuates the idea that it is OK to be horrible. I think that apart from anything else, what having the death penalty does to people who have to enforce it is totally disgusting and barbaric. I also don't think people who live in overcrowded prisons where drugs, violence and rape are rife, and where you have to use the toilet in the same room that you eat in is anything other than a punishment of the most degrading kind. I don't have answers to the problem of violence. I know that it has existed as long as human records have been kept. It is a very primitive response. I do know that it isn't an answer. nell
