The US has carried out its 1,000th execution since capital punishment was reintroduced in 1976. Kenneth Boyd, a convicted killer, was put to death by lethal injection in North Carolina for the murder of his estranged wife and her father in 1988. Though a majority of people in the US back the death penalty, polls indicate support is starting to wane. 'This 1,000th execution is a milestone. It's a milestone we should all be ashamed of and hopefully one day we will all learn that meeting violence with violence is not the answer,' Boyd's lawyer Thomas Maher said after watching the execution. Well I would certainly agree with that. Anyone reading this notice the date of the crime? Pat x |

Yes it was a long time ago. I don't agree with execution at all. It is just like the middle ages. Pat you are a bit of a thread starter today? Is it a new thing or just a one off? |

Hi again Lou ;-) The Gregory thread was late last night / early morning, & I started that as I was intriqued by it all. I thought the 1,000th execution since 1976 was worth mentioning, especially the amount of time the prisoners are on death row. I am also against it as you probably know. I probably won't be starting anymore threads today I should think ;-) Wouldn't want to overdo it now would I lol. Pat x |

Please don't get me started on America. They are breaching the Rules of War by torturing prisoners, breaching Civil Rights with such institutions as Guantanamo Bay, and generally acting as the World's playground bullies, including against their own Citizens. |

Of those thousand executions, a third took place in Texas. http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/ has murder rates from all the states (with and without the DP). Admittedly it's a site biased against capital punishment, but anyone looking at the statistics can see that the existance and use of the death penalty has little effect on the murderrate. In fact, some of the more execution-happy states have the worst murder rates of all. Some of the statistics about the DP in America are shocking - like that 80% of people executed were convicted of killing a white person, yet white people make up only 50% of murder victims. |

I saw that Fred as I nearly mentioned about that too, very heavy handed of the Singapore Authorities & it could cause damage to both Countries relationship with each other. Grampa I agree with you. Twinkle That is one of the reasons I think the Death Penalty is so wrong it does not deter, never did, never will. I find it disgusting in a so called Civilised Christian Country they Murder Murderers, after keeping them so long on Death Row which like Fred has said is tortureious in itself. Pat x |

I would just like to say that I feel that if a person knows that they can take a life or lives with the knowledge that they themselves will only be incarcerated for a certain amount of time and still get medical care and attention , food , money and visits from there relies then where is the deterrent ???????. Yes each case is totally different and should be judged that way but to be able to kill another human in any why you what to knowing you will live to kill again to me is wrong. Yes I speak from my heart having seen things in my life that I would not like to relate , and yeah I think Grandpa Jim is brill but sorry Jim I think we should have a death sentance ' for those murders that can be proven 100% guilty and no ifs and buts' . Wishing I could explain myself better and not realising I could write that much I'll finish :-)))))))))))))))) |

Hi Kim ;-) That says it all Iran & America same amount of killings. We are to feel it is right for America to create the same problem in Iran as they have in Iraq? well I think not. Thanks for that it was interesting to see the figures. Pat x |

Anyone smuuggling drugs in Singapore knows the penalty, so they should not complain. It is none of our business. Likewise Texas. D |

Hi Pat not a problem and yes we do differ :-)) but I think that maybe because I have had to deal with murders , bombings and killings in my life that I feel the way I do , and it is not an eye for an eye attitude I really do believe we need a harder deterrent for the those who feel they can take life at will . :-)))))))))))))) |

Hi Gary its good to see you. I shall not try & talk you out of your beliefs it would be useless to try to do so. I cannot change from mine either. I feel It's such a pity a Country professing to be a Christian one can justify State Murder, the same Country that believes in right to march into other Countries & justify it by claiming the leaders to be guilty of murder!!! I'm totally against the death penalty. A friend in the US wrote this to me today - 'The average of murder rates among states with capital punishment is 5.1, but the average among states without the death penalty is 2.9. So much for the deterrent effect.' States wth the death penalty have a higher murder rate than those without - so it's not working is it? Gwynne |

Hi Kim with all due respect when I worked in the places I did , I didn't actually see anybody with a clipboard taking notes on the murders and atrocities to record notes for any sort of table . Have you got the stats for how many people were murdered in Uganda whilst the fat man ruined a country . Or how many squaddies and Irish people were murdered whilst the Gulf war was on . In Bosnia people were murdered and tortured , forced out of there homes so other people could move in any stats on that , ??or the babies who were killed there for fun and cruelty or just for being born in the wrong part of the Country. Kim you have your stats , I have my nightmares , that is the difference :-)))))))))) |

Sorry Saints Alive I just got the statistics from a website. I really didn't mean to offend you or anyone else, but I think its up to Pat to decide whether I delete my post, as this is her thread. Regards. Kim |
