we get typed letters via the post saying next time our son gets work sent home please ensure he gets it done only to find out he didnt understand it neither did the rest of the class, and most of the class got a letter too,say average of 30 p per stamp, 30 kids per class, thats some thing like 9 pound for a teacher to then tell them not to worry cos they can use it as study work good job hes not a child that comes home to hiding

ggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrr.. sorry .... was trying to stop a 10 year old getting more upset !!! Alan is going into school instead at 3.30 tomorrow.... i dont think he trusts me, lol. About 3 weeks ago [ after 2 torn pe bags and a torn coat !] Alex told me a boy called Ian had done it.... Soooo i said next time he does anything, you tell a teacher. Alex did this, and got told to ' go away and stop being silly'.... NEXT STEP...... i told him ,ok, next time Ian does whatever, you do the same back ... hence, the 'naughty book'.... which entails some nonsense involving smiley faces ! I can guarantee there will be NO smiley faces on the teachers faces come tomorrow.... we have had a sh*t weekend, with tears etc....... Hubby is seething !!!! Should be interesting, i just wish i could be there..... i was going to finish work early, Alan has told me he will deal with it ! Sue x

awe sue that makes me boilin mad when teachers do that, it took us ages to get our son to defend himself if he was being bullied, as we always thought reporting it was best move, tillnothing done, plus we learnt with daughter first at school, we then get phone call from school sons been sent to head teacher for splitting boys lip, turns out this kid had kept shoving him , name callin, of the swear word type(all during lesson mind-where was the teacher i asked) well son gave him a shove back but caught the boy a cracker, eventually the bully appologised, and deputy appologised for not checking out story, hmm is your hubby reasonable or likely to blow his top i send a hug to your lad and tell him to carry on defending himself sod the smily faces book

I got bullied a lot at school. The school did alsorts, including blaming me! At one point they made me see a social worker. She decided it was apparently my Mum's fault! My parents have been such wonderful support over the years it seems utterly ridiculous to blame either of them! School's never seem to get it right, in my experience just worse.

Mmmm ... not sure ... Alan is quieter than me, lol... ok i heard the sniggers !.. but... he is so bl**dy annoyed tonight, i think he might just tear up the silly book !!! The main problem seems to be that these smiley face things have to be earned ... for being good etc. But as Alex is dyslexic, he never ever finishes his work on time.... sooo that is a non smiley face...... How silly is all this ? I dread to think how this teacher would have coped with my 2 elder sons [ now 24 and 26] they were monsters at school !!! The 24 year old has just been in Alex's bedroom talking to him.... and telling how proud he is that Alex hit the horrible boy back... whoops, lol. Alex is now ok..... just worried he will get into trouble if his father talks to the teacher... how sad is that !?! Sue.... who might just finish work early tomorrow........

Sue - At the end of the day I am absolutely certain you will do the best that you can and that Alex will know that. You have already shown him how much you support him and love him. At the end of the day, it's the support of such a loving family that will help him forget all this nastiness and have a wonderful life. I wish you all the luck in the world. As I mentioned, I've been in Alex's position and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Wish I could skip uni tomorrow and come with you! My dyslexia was picked up when I was 17 by my mum, and sudenly everything made sence. I never finished work in primary and alot of work in secondary school was marked 'to be completed!' - When I was diagnose I thought if only we had known before how different things could be. I was lucky that I had lovely teachers that let me finish my work on Friday's when everyone else was sat in the cold watching football or netball. Unfortunately they tried keeping me in at play time and it never worked - if anything my work got worse. I understand that writen work is the only was teachers asess childrens work but it they stopped to look they would find that dyslexic children are as bright (usually brighter ) than other children. It might be worth checking that Alex's teacher is aware that he has dyslexia and ask them to praise him for trying and for the work he dose do instead of critisising him for not finishing. I'm sure if Alex was given the time he would produce a lovely peice of work, but with the dyslexia he dose what he can. I'm sure most people don't understand that dyslexia is such a complex thing to have and can make school hell for children as they fail to keep up and are failed by lack of support, sometimes leaving them feeling useless and stupid. I hope you can sort this teacher out - childhood is hard enough without having your teacher make you cry.

Hi Joan, will let you know what happens .....xxx Hi Darth, think this is the first time we have met.... hi. We have decided Alex will NOT go to school in the morning... his brother is off work,,, so he will watch him... Darth, i am sorry you had to go through similar... it is awful, but i always worried about him being scared of going to school because of bullying that goes on from children, i never envisaged a child of mine being scared of the teachers... certainly makes you think !!!! It should be interesting [ to say the least] tomorrow........ pmsl !!!! Seems they have picked on the wrong child this week........ Sue xxx

Hi Sue... My daughter had the same last Thursday with her daughter. Having to ride to school about a mile on a pushbike, my daughter asked her to call somewhere before school, so obviously she was all tuckered out when she arrived just in time for school. The teacher noticed her flushed and a bit panicky (getting books and stuff ready for lessons )... Promptly put her in a room on her own and accused her of drug taking!!! She was kept locked in that room by herself all morning. She was allowed home for dinner, and my daughter kept her home for the afternoon. The teacher rang my daughter and still accusing her of drug taking or some other substance abuse because she said that my grandaughter was not usually like she had been that morning!! Of course... she had not and never has been in any contact with any type of drug and my daughter will be going to the school with my grandaughters father ( divorced) tomorrow morning... They are absolutley fuming and I dread to think what will happen. That teacher should be reprimanded severely for the anguish she has caused our family over the weekend. How dare she accuse my grandaughter of drug taking because she seemed all 'puffed out'. She would be b***dy puffed out if she had ridden a bike at full pelt for a mile so as not to be late for school!! It was her birthday that day too... What a present hey??? Anne :)

Hi Lunar, Alex's dyslexia was picked up very early... he was about 6. He still cannot read or write very well..... but is 'too' bright in other ways !!!! He gets 1 to 1 teaching every day, not that it seems to help much.... he simply cannot 'see' the letters... the worst thing is that he wants to go to the same school as his brothers, but that is totally out of the question . It is sooooo frustrating.... I must admit though.... reading what you have typed tonight has helped.... well done... i do realise how hard you must have worked to get where you have babe ! It has given me some hope for Alex ! Sue xxx

That's disgusting Anne!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe that there are some bad teachers around!!!!! And before I go to bed (which I must, now lol!) to anyone who doesn't believe dyslexia exists then I challenge them to sit with a child that struggles with their work first before they 'judge' them, & remember a lot of these kids aren't getting the one-to-one they deserve/need cos this government doesn't give schools the money they need to give them the extra time & attention they need!!!! Right, now i've put the worl to rights, i'm off !!! lol Night folks! :0) Joan xxx

Sue, I don't know what you and the school have tried but if you haven't already tried coloured paper or coloured plastic over the page Alex is looking at, I would suggest you try it. If that helps a bit, it may be worth getting him assessed for glasses with coloured lenses, they might not help but they may help alot. I find anything other than white easier to read, but I'm lucky that I can cope reading black on white, even if I end up with eye strain occationally. The BDA have some info on coloured glasses and overlays, and google produce quite a bit too. http://www.bdadyslexia.org.uk/extra360p.html Best of luck tomorrow and let us all know how it goes. I hate the thought of any child going though what I did at school but unfortunatly I know that until teachers reconise dyslexia and make allowences, so many children will continue to struggle.

Sorry your lad is having so much hassle. Aren't there some special coloured sheets that dyslexic people can read through which make the letters look right to them. i may be wrong but I am sure I read about them and assumed anyone classed as dyslexic would be tested with them and the right one found to help. No good one to one teaching if the rest of the 'package' is not in place.
