I got the impression that when poor Sarah Cunliffe was bringing up her orphaned ''brothers'' (aged 30 not 12 LOL) that she was the breadwinner??? But in 1891 she has another adult brother as head of house who is the Borough Rate Collector!!! Did they mention that???? Merry |

I bet the person on here who works for the company that prints up their trees knows far more than he/she is letting on :-))) |

I too wanted her to get the death cert and look into the other siblings more - she could have got their birth certs for instance. I did enjoy her reactions though and her comments about being a detective summed up Family History as I see it. However I thought she was so lovely (she also has a flatter chest than me which is saying summat lol) and her family sooo much nicer than Julian's last week! Are any of the other GReaders reading Hard Times at the moment - this episode really brought the book to life for me - mill owners versus mill hands - amazing too how the two sides have 'equalled out' now and become one family. I also noticed from that brief glimpse of the 1891 census that there was a brother listed as Head & she was below him as Sister. They seemed to totally ignore that, despite it being highly significant to the story of her bringing up the younger children 'single handed'. OK, she is new to viewing census records, but the person showing it to her should surely have noticed, just as we 'old-hands' immediately did. It surprised me that she didn't bother with the death certificate for Thomas, despite having a social history lesson about what was going on at the time. But I guess that is more to do with creating an interesting programme than filling in details on a real family tree... Next week should be interesting, being based mainly overseas. Looking forward to that. Carole |

I watched the programme and must admit that I wasnt that impressed with the research - it seemed far too 'bitty' for me - far too many gaps - I like to know all the dark secrets; then it occurred to me that it's possible they did the research and found out loads more, however I assume they would have had to gain the permission of the descendants of the missing siblings of Sara before they could reveal anything (which might not have been exactly what the family would want to have broadcast) and this caused the programme to be rather bitty. I did think it a pity that Thomas' death cert. was not shown, after all the fuss that was made about his likely death - perhaps it wasnt due to the cause they stated (perhaps it was a more mundane death, and therefore not such good telly) Hope next week's programme is a little more illuminating - I did not warm to Jane at all and was thoroughly irritated by her accent throughout - how come her mum and aunt and dad didn't have such broad accents and yet lived in the area all their lives??? I rather fancy she put's the accent on for effect. Jacqui |

Maz LOL and even flatter than mine which is really saying something. Very interesting hearing about the mills as many of my Lancashire ancestors were weavers, bobbin winders and bleachers. Wasn't the noise from just one machine horrific? Can you imagine the racket from a whole floor of them for 14 hours? I too would have ordered the death certificate. It could have been any one of numerous childhood diseases (my great aunt died of Scarlet Fever aged 5 in 1874 in Lancashire) or a freak accident as Jess mentioned. Either way it would have contributed even more to the understanding of conditions in those days. Daisy |

Jacqui - I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't warm to Jane, I too found her accent irritating - I thought it sounded 'silly' like her character Bubbles and not very genuine. But I'm from the South so I wouldn't really know. I thought she made an awful lot of fuss over the little boy dying - maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but it was so common for children to die before the age of 5 back then and I wasn't at all surprised. I thought is was especially odd as she didn't seem interested in the other Brothers and Sister - just that little boy? There was a mention of a family falling out - can't remember which lady it was, but the one who married into the posh Methodist family didn't have much to do with her real family? A definite hint of skeletons in the closet. I'm sure that Aunt knew much more than she let on, she didn't seem at all surprised when Jane mentioned that there were a number of other siblings, but then claimed to never have heard of them! I have to admit I lost interest in it a bit - didn't grip me enough to keep me interested, although the part about life in the Mills was interesting. Kaye x |
