I have been bought a laptop for my birthday---great. How easy is it to transfer all my stuff from the old computer to the laptop. I am not very computer literate and can see myself losing everything. Help please Gloria |

Gloria, I am not very computer literate either. I transfer everything to disc (CD) then load it onto my laptop. (I regularly save things to disc anyway, just incase my PC crashes.) Good luck, June xx |

Hi June, by disc, do you mean floppy? Just realised you put CD, so am I right in thinking I can put an ordinary CD in my computer and download onto it? Then put it in the laptop and off load it into that? I am not good at this at all. Gloria |

I believe you can save to floppy, I save to a CD because my laptop doesn't take floppies, I would check that out first. June xx |

Thanks June. I would have thought there was someway to transfer it all straight from one to the other. Gloria |

As I understand it, things that are on the internet, will be available on your laptop aswell, like your Family Tree on Genes but my Tree on PAF and my documents have to be saved or emailed over. I hope I am wrong and that there is an easier way. June xx |

I have a load of photos on the old one and I would think they would take an age to transfer, even though we are on broadband. Would it make sense to transfer all these photos to CD ( I am talking a lot, 100's)? how many photos can go on one CD? Gloria |

''settings and file transfer wizard'' |

Thanks Diana, I would have thought it could be done direct, but I am a complete numpty where these things are concerned. It was bad enough when we connected to Broadband. Gloria |

Gloria, These should be saved to CD anyway, a friend of mine was very silly, he had over 3000 photos on his PC and lost most of them when his PC crashed. When you have the CD in, it will tell you how much space there is. June xx |

Bob, I haven't dared turn it on yet. I remember a thread on here ages ago, and they said it was easy as long as you followed the directions literally letter by letter. Going to have to bite the bullet soon. Gloria |

Thanks June, I know I should keep them safe, and I did mean to, but the day never came. Today is going to be it. I start my first day as a pensioner today, hence the pressie, so I will show them I have not gone senile. Gloria |

your new laptop probably comes with a load of setting up, etc discs...........you will need to load them first, probably............... if you have XP on the PC, look on that for the wizard....but as has been said, if you can backup to Cd, OR floppy, then do it......... ANY backup is better than NO backup.... Bob |

A quick and easy thing is to buy a memory stick (about £20)!! You can pop it in the back and immediately copy files to it and then pop it in the back of the laptop and transfer it all across there!! That way you kill two birds with one stone and have it there on the stick for safety's sake!! |

unless you have done it already, the first job is to charge the battery..................(you can load discs at the same time...........) Best of luck with the new toy...........soon it will be a Tool....... Bob |

June they are fantastic and much less hassle than disc's as you have everything in one place!! But make sure you get one with lots of memory - I have 2 now and one is 112mb and the other is over 500mb!! Defo worth the money! |
