When I first left school I worked for a small chain of chemists in their various shops for 6 months until there was a telephonist training vacancy at what is now BT. Did that for 6 years until I had my son, then worked in the evenings as a controller/telephonist at a car breakdown/recovery company for 4 years until I had my daughter. Then, whilst son was at school, I strapped baby daughter in car seat and delivered vehicle parts for the Motor Factors my husband ran. Then when daughter started playgroup, I worked in the evenings for a different breakdown/recovery company until I had 2nd daughter. When she was a year old I became a registered childminder - a job I loved and did for over 20 years. I also ran a Mother & Toddler group, jointly ran a childminders support group, helped at playgroup and listened to the children read at the local infants school. After my 2nd son was born, I continued as a registered childminder, and worked one night a week for the breakdown/recovery company. After the youngest of my grandchildren started infant school, I 'retired' from childminding (ha ha!) and now work part time during the day for the breakdown/recovery company as a general dogsbody. I answer phones, I do the accounts, I dispatch jobs, I do the wages, I make the tea, I sort out the paperwork, I placate the drivers etc etc. - not a lot different from childminding, just bigger children! LOL. In my spare time I run occasional creches for a local charity (and look after my grandchildren in the holidays!) Oh, nearly forgot - I'm also secretary of our local village hall management committee. Sue xx.

my first job after leaving school at 16 was in the Army Pay Office, calculating wages & allowances for TAVR officers (didn't even use a calculator in those days!) more local authority clerical/accounts-type jobs, then the same for 2 private companies, finishing as an accountancy assistant before I got bored and retrained as.... computer programmer, mostly working on financial & payroll type packages for small & medium sized businesses usually in the building & contruction sector, till I was made redundant twice in 2 years ... went to uni as a mature student to do molecular biology (haven't even been invented when I was at school LOL) liked it so much I stayed on to do a research degree, in genetic aspects of brain tumours... can't get a decent job now, because of my age, so I'm sort-of retired...
