Nana Anna and Mags, I am so deeply sorry if this thread has upset you by bringing back bad memories. I know you would have said if you wanted me to remove it ... but still, you must both be hurting such a lot. I really am sorry for your losses. This is a nasty killer. People do need to be reminded every so often. I NEVER give CM a thought, ............ its not a daily topic of conversation is it .... but I think it should be advertised MORE on TV. I'll be buying some extra Detectors/Monitors ... I really am sorry for your loss. xXx {{{{HUGS}}}} AM I getting what I'm paying for at the price I mentioned above ???? SOULD I be buying a better well known brand at a higher price ? What do folks think ? Elaine ;-) |

Elaime , go to a reputable DIY store and buy CM detectors from store as the better ones need batteries. I have a CM detector in my hallway, have had it for about 3 years now as I was getting really bad headaches and feeling sick and dizzy. I called in the council and he couldn't find any CM but told me to get these detectors to be on the safe side. Did the gas board that came to your daughters house take the gas fire off the wall and check the chimney for a blockage/brick fallen down and blocking the flue. So glad to hear your daughter and her friend are slowly getting better. Hugs for both of them. Sue |

Elaine, there really isn't any need to apologise, it's a while ago now since it happened but it does illustrate how easily this sort of thing can happen but thank you for your sensitivity. I guess from what you've said that you have bought one of those pads that change colour? They're ok but do tend to get grubby with dust too. The detector we got cost around £25. It's a free standing unit about the size of a small transistor radio, has a battery and emits a loud piercing alarm when CM is detected. There is a low battery warning incorporated too. They may very well be a little bit cheaper now - OH is going to check the Screwfix catalogue as soon as Inspector Linley has finished! Mags x |

It is worth getting the more expensive version but the ones you have bought are better than nothing - I used to send them to my son when he was at Uni, mothers what are we like? Christina |

I think carbon monoxide is produced by any fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood or charcoal. Not upset me Elaine, it was very sad but it is one of those things you can't smell it, see it or taste it. Anna x |

£24.99 in Screwfix - but you would have to pay p&p on that too - £29.99 in the Argos Catalogue. 701/7508 A pad or crystal doesn't wake you up. Mags xx |

Hi Elaine I am glad to hear your daughter and her friend are both ok. You are right, I don't think about CM at all, but this has made me realise the danger. Time to go shopping and get some detectors I think. Nanna-M x |

Glad to hear that the girls have been properly checked over and were sent home, Elaine. That must have reassured you at least. Very weird though isn't it? Hope they eventually find out what caused it. My Mam has recently had new window frames put in and she says that they have some sort of built-in air vent which allows CM to be evacuated. However, I should maybe get her one of those detectors everyone is talking about - you can never be too safe when it comes to gas. Margaret |

Sorry for delay - was cutting son's hair / on phone to daughter / and have just had to go and tell son to get out of bath !! (shivelled like a prune he is !!) Right. Item number : 170016586549 for those who can check ! Seem to be the size of hand held radio ... but the button darkens in the middle if CO is detectored. Description: UNICOM TWIN PACK OF CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS. IF YOU FEEL OVERTIRED OR EVEN HAVE A HEADACHE CHECK THE DETECTOR, IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE. EVERY YEAR PEOPLE DIE FROM CO POISONING FROM DOMESTIC APPLIANCES. IF CO IS PRESENT THE CENTRE OF THE DETECTOR WILL DARKEN. Have spoken with daughter. They have both been paranoid, and have had windows open most of the night. Will sleep with bedroom windows open for next couple of nights anyway. They have spoken with Landlord. He is going to try and get some in bulk and place them in all his houses. In the meantime, the one's I've ordered will be better than nothing ! WILL CHECK the date when they arrive. Thanks for that advice ! Daughter and her mate are BOTH going to have car exhaust checked and daughter will check for C M detectors in town tomorrow when she goes for a job interview :-) Fingers Crossed on all counts :-))) Thanks again everyone, you've all been wonderful as usual :-)) Elaine ;-) |

That type is not really much good only last a few months anyway. This is the type you would be better buying 250016648779. As someone said it will wake you up if C O has built up at night. Anna x |

Just catching up Elaine. Glad your daughter and her friend are OK now and thanks for this thread as I am not sure if my 2 have these detectors in their houses or not, I will check with them. Know my daughter had one in her old house. I don't think I need one I have open fire to run my heating. Germaine x |

Gwyneth (Sunshine Smile) How deeply traumatic for you sweetheart. My heart goes out to you and your children. Such a very frightening experience for all concerned - I can tell. I'm really sorry that this thread has brought back such upsetting memories for you ... and so very glad that you and yours are here to tell your experience. {{{{{MASSIVE HUGS}}}}}}}} ... sincerely wish I could give you a real hug. Although this has obviously been upsetting for some, I feel that in a way, my daughters experience today MAY help someone tomorrow. Even today, when she phoned and said they were on their way to hospital .... it never dawned on me how serious this could have been. Because she's walking/talking etc I was oblivious to what might have been. Part of me is thankful that I didn't panic .... but the other part of me says ' how could you be so stupid and ignorant, not realising how serious this was '. You do take so much for granted every day ..... Best To Be Safe ...... My heart goes out to all who may have suffered loss or been traumatised because of this silent killer ...... Elaine ;-) |

Elaine might nto even be her hosue. I read in a mag recently about some people who got Cm posionin and it came from a faulty flue of their neighbours.... or something similar... something to consider when trying to find the source. |
