Just catching up Elaine. Glad your daughter and her friend are OK now and thanks for this thread as I am not sure if my 2 have these detectors in their houses or not, I will check with them. Know my daughter had one in her old house. I don't think I need one I have open fire to run my heating. Germaine x

Glad to hear that the girls have been properly checked over and were sent home, Elaine. That must have reassured you at least. Very weird though isn't it? Hope they eventually find out what caused it. My Mam has recently had new window frames put in and she says that they have some sort of built-in air vent which allows CM to be evacuated. However, I should maybe get her one of those detectors everyone is talking about - you can never be too safe when it comes to gas. Margaret

dear elaine, after reading this story just had to reply....just want to say firstly i'm glad your dauoghter and friend are ok....this hapened to me and my three children 6 years ago..don't want to go into to much detail as it still upsets me when i think about it as we where very close to death we at to go to the wirrel in liverpool to the decompresion chamber,as we had that much carbon manoxide in our blood stream we had to breath 100% oxigen fot three hours the first night we got there and 2 hours the next morning...not a very nice thing to have to go threw with your three children who where16,14.and 12 at the time...luckely we are all hear to tell the story.can't tell people enough please please please get your boiler checked regular i to have carbon monoxide detector ...well worth every penny.even thinking of this again makes me very very upset...just want to say to you elaine try and get to the bottom of it..you don't have carbon manoxide in your blood for nothing.......... kind regards gwyneth.

yes, you are right, ANY combustion, without sufficient oxygen produces Co. but more so on fossil fuels...... Bob,

I think carbon monoxide is produced by any fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood or charcoal. Not upset me Elaine, it was very sad but it is one of those things you can't smell it, see it or taste it. Anna x

It is worth getting the more expensive version but the ones you have bought are better than nothing - I used to send them to my son when he was at Uni, mothers what are we like? Christina

Elaine, there really isn't any need to apologise, it's a while ago now since it happened but it does illustrate how easily this sort of thing can happen but thank you for your sensitivity. I guess from what you've said that you have bought one of those pads that change colour? They're ok but do tend to get grubby with dust too. The detector we got cost around £25. It's a free standing unit about the size of a small transistor radio, has a battery and emits a loud piercing alarm when CM is detected. There is a low battery warning incorporated too. They may very well be a little bit cheaper now - OH is going to check the Screwfix catalogue as soon as Inspector Linley has finished! Mags x

Elaime , go to a reputable DIY store and buy CM detectors from store as the better ones need batteries. I have a CM detector in my hallway,have had it for about 3 years now as I was getting really bad headaches and feeling sick and dizzy. I called in the council and he couldn't find any CM but told me to get these detectors to be on the safe side. Did the gas board that came to your daughters house take the gas fire off the wall and check the chimney for a blockage/brick fallen down and blocking the flue. Nana Anna and Mags, I am so deeply sorry if this thread has upset you by bringing back bad memories. I know you would have said if you wanted me to remove it ... but still, you must both be hurting such a lot. I really am sorry for your losses. This is a nasty killer. People do need to be reminded every so often. I NEVER give CM a thought, ............ its not a daily topic of conversation is it .... but I think it should be advertised MORE on TV. Thank goodness for that Elaine, my husband's friend died with CM poisoning after his boiler had been serviced and they hadn't put something back properly! The only reason his wife survived was because she fell next to the cat flap. We got our CM detector from Screwfix - get a few of you together to buy them from there and you can get them a bit cheaper. However dear they are - they are worth every penny. Mags x
