I think that's the default setting Betty. ok the first thing I would like you to do now is create a system restore point - do you know how to do this or would you like me to talk you through it? Give it a sensible name such as 'Update Problems' or something else you can instantly recognise

I don't use OnSpeed so I'm not sure of the interface but isn't there a little icon in the system tray - bottom right hand corner of your screen? You should be able to right click on it and a menu should pop up - see if you can turn it off from there. You may also be able to do it from your browser - there should be an icon or even a menu at the top of your browser (Internet Explorer).

Hi Erroll, I will give it a try, by the way when I got broadband I had already paid Onspeed for two year so it still is running. Now this is a bit technican for me how do I Exit OnSpeed fully (don't just disable it) is it via the setting, wher is that?? p.s told you I wasn't technically minded. Betty

ok it could be OnSpeed causing the problem - sometimes does. If so it is fairly easy to sort out. For those who don't know, OnSpeed is a compression programme to speed up your internet connection - particularly on dial up. Betty, you can try one of two things: 1. Exit OnSpeed fully (don't just disable it) OR 2. Try going to Settings in OnSpeed and select Features and then select Use browser's proxy exclusion setting. You will probably find the first suggestion easier and feel more comfortable trying it. Give it a go and then try Windows Updates again. Incidentally, if you are now on broadband you can probably cope without OnSpeed if you are connected at a half decent speed! Could you let me know how you get on? If it doesn't work there are some other things we can try including changing proxy and firewall settings but would rather try the easy option first lol

Do you run a piece of software called OnSpeed to speed up your internet connection?

righty ho - this can be down to a number of reasons including proxy/firewall settings. Are you using the computer at home and is it on a network? Also, would it be better to answer here or on tips?
