1. Click Start and then Control Panel. 2. Click (or double click depending on your settings) on Security Center (horrid American spelling lol). 3. A window opens and it should say whether Firewall is switched on. 4. Click on where is says this and it should expand out to tell you which firewall you are using. |

ok 1. At the top of Internet Explorer click on Tools. 2. Select Internet Options. 3. Click on the Connections tab. 4. Click the 'LAN Settings...' button. MAKE A NOTE OF ANYTHING YOU CHANGE FROM NOW ON (verbatim) 5. Under the bit under Proxy Server clear all boxes and remove any ticks. 6. The only thing remaining should be a tick next to 'Automatically detect settings'. 7. Click OK. 8. Click OK again. Now try Windows Update again - it may work but if not there are still other things we can try. |

No we are not ready to try the updates yet - you will need a pen and paper though because you are going to change a few settings so you need to write down anything you change just in case you need to change it back. |

You can type in anything you want - basically you are creating a point that you can roll the computer back to if the next steps go wrong so you need to give it a name - I suggest something like 'Updates Problem' or something similar. |

Right we're going to create another without going to Windows Updates: 1. Click on Start then All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. 2. Select 'Create a restore point'. 3. Click Next. 4. Type in a Restore point descrtiption. 5. Click Create. 6. Wait a few seconds while it actually creates the restore point and then Click Close. |
