It has mostly subsided now. I got something from the chemist. like a sort of pen, to apply whatever was in it, to the affected area. It has ammonia in it among other things. Thanks for the concern and advice.

went to the ST Johns caravan, and was given a quick once over, suplied with cold compresses and a anthistamine pill............ was fine in about two hours....

The dreaded scottish midge is out and about, although not too bad so far as it is too windy.

Bites itch like mad, but over-the-counter anti-histamine cream is brilliant at easing the irritation. You only need a tiny bit, so one tube lasts for ages.

Bob .hope the itch soon gets better .GP best person really to talk to for any further issues. .This time of year there are a lot of midges & flying insects need to be careful can be nasty little blighters

almost all insect bite creams will contain antihistamine in one form or another and are prescribed for most insect bites.

uk common mozzies are up and runing now and at first you dont feel anything as they inject fluid to aid the bleed then suck away till full ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,.scars to to prove it.

A couple of weeks ago, while at an airshow.
I ate a prepacked sandwich...prawn cocktail thingy....
within minutes i felt I was being eaten alive by some kind of insects..............itching and swellings on face and back...


nope, allergic reaction to the sandwich....Probably....

I agree, Sylvia, even in Britain, antihistamines are given for insect bites.

Stop the itching/allergic reaction - stop the scratching - reduce the chance of infection.

I hate to contradict you, but oral antihistamines are regularly recommended over here to reduce the itching caused by insect bites, including mosquitoes, even by doctors.

and ........... they work, I have proved that :-D

Antihistamine creams are recommended by doctors and sold for use on insect bites as well as for other allergic itching

Mind you, we do have many more species of mosquitoes than you do. Maybe your bites don't respond to antihistamines?

I had a terrific reaction (all over my body) to one of their bites and it took a while - and questions by the sister - before either of us narrowed it down.

Shudder to think of it now as I wasn't a pretty sight.

take one antihistaine tablet for a couple of days.

mosquito are getting active now and you dont feel anything till it swells and starts itching and itching some more........ :-)

Could be anything Bob, your immune system obviously started reacting, as long as it didn't affect your breathing it's all good. Annoying but good.

While shaving this morning I noticed a tiny puncture wound on the site.

Brown Argentinian ant Bob? Never heard of them being in the UK though.

Last night, sitting in the garden with a glass of wine, ( a rather good Australian white), I felt something on my cheek, which I squashed. A minute or two later, my face swelled up on one side, with a hard lump as well. And it throbbed. I didn't feel a sting or bite. This morning it has gone down a bit, and I went to the chemist and got some stuff to put on it, which may or may not be helping. The pharmacist didn't know what caused it either. Any ideas anyone?
