If we get any calls like that we just say that our son deals with all our business affairs and they'd have to talk to him about it. We ask for a number for him to ring, and the phone goes dead!!!!

Here is a bit more info on how BT uses your connection as a hotspot.

Elizabeth, From what I can recall - and no doubt Rollo has more up to date info- a BT internet customer needs to log onto a BT Hot Spot with their unique password.

Reading the link Rollo posted, it was surprising to read that non-BT customers can pay to use a BT Hotspot. Its worth mentioning that the last post on that thread was in Nov 2014.

I got one last week from Asian Edward's brother.

He insisted that he was from the TPS ( Telephone Preference Service) and wanted me to update my Visa Card Details

He hung up only when I told him that TPS is a free service, they never had any payment details in the first place!

Be careful!

Standard BT home broadband shares yr wifi by default. This comes as a big surprise to many people.

She must have been Asian Edward's sister. :-D

He got as far as 'I'm from BT internet' then cut off when I asked, in rather a hostile tone, why he was calling.

If I'd thought about it, I could have said I was with a different provider rather an implying it was BT.

my daughter has just posted this on Facebook - I thought I would repeat lit here to keep us all alert - she has only just moved house and it happened within two hours of her broad band being connected!

Someone's tried to scam me with BT said I had lots of people trying to access my broadband..... and I needed to change the pass word .....new it was strange as only got switched on an hour or so ago !!! Woman pushing for my details I kept quizzing her as it made no sense she hung up . I rang BT who said no phone at all came from them ...... if it hadn't just been switched on think I might have fallen for it sounded so plausible........ be warned don't let it happen to you
