Heavy rain most of the day but no snow yet. If it has got to Essex it don't suppose it will be long before it reaches us in Suffolk. But it is January - shouldn't we expect wintry weather?

AnnMarieG Report 12 Jan 2017 21:29

Rain all day here in Essex but been snowing heavy since 5pm and settling. Love to see it but don't like it for anyone that has to go out in it. Keep safe and warm everyone. <3

Well, getting home from work was fun - not!! :-(
Lashed it down with rain from about 10am, then very heavy snow started falling about 3.30pm - and, despite the rain, it settled.

I left work early - at about 4.40,
Just reaching the road was a trial. I avoided the icy path, and took to the ivy covered ground, sliding from tree to tree!
Walking downhill on the road to the bus stop was, to say the least, hair-raising, snow freezing on water - oh joys!

By the time I got home, the snow/slush had frozen on the hill I live on, just crossing the road (the kindly bus driver stopped 'on the corner' for me) in the dark took some negotiating.

But then again, what would I know - 'someone' once insisted Winchester was relatively flat so it probably didn't snow, and I surely couldn't have had to negotiate any hills. ;-)

Edit: I gave up on the brolly too - it kept blowing inside out - when it wasn't dragging me along :-S

Ooo...our rain of the last 4 hours has turned into big fat flakes of snow & is setting on the grass. It'll probably thaw during daylight hours tomorrow if not before. This is in
Kent not far south of the M25.

Yes Andysmum, we had "thundersnow" earlier this afternoon.

Ive been out in the car, and am just about to leave to get daughter from work.
It's not easy getting out!
Main roads are fine but, side streets are awful with compacted snow freezing over.
Cars being left parked either side of the slippy streets doesn't help either as there isn't a lot of space left in between. Grrr

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 12 Jan 2017 16:41

Snowing hard here now, and settling.

The Metro on Tuesday was forecasting something called "thundersnow" which apparently is what happens when the air is so cold that the rain you normally get with a thunderstorm falls as snow.

It sounds as though GlasgowLass has been getting a taste of it! :-S

Going over Beatock yesterday afternoon it was like a blizzard, back home today we woke up to a light smattering of snow on the ground and we've had snow flurries on and off most of the afternoon, down to 1 degree at the moment (hope it doesn't freeze tonight)! stay safe and warm everyone. :-)

AnninGlos Report 12 Jan 2017 13:12

The forecasters on our TV for this area last night admitted that it was really difficult to forecast this weekends weather, all he could say was it would be cold and probably wet but maybe some snow on high ground. :-S

It is very cold here today and, since 11 o'clock very wet. We got to the supermarket by 9.15, did the shopping and were home just after eleven, not going anywhere else and food in for the weekend.

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 12 Jan 2017 12:17

Snow here too, almost down to sea level.

Arran is beautiful in the sunshine.

BBC forecast is for the snow showers to move south to north of England, Northern Ireland and Wales. Also, here, the wind has dropped, so it doesn't feel so bitterly cold.

source ... Met Office who are generally more reliable than the Daily Express.

Their trending forecast is that UK winters will become wetter amd a lot more windy with less precipitation falling as snow. Think of the last few years ... jog any memories?
