I think some posters may possibly be missing the point.

For starters, my comments were certainly neither rude nor patronising.

The whole point of the thread (please please read the opening comments carefully) is that despite there being much documented evidence about the health dangers of being overweight, many people do not consider themselves to be because of the way society, the media etc etc portrays things.

I doubt if I will ever have a fat chance of slimming down a bit.

There may just be a slim chance.

The comment from you that I think is rude and patronising is this bit of the quote I added in my earlier post

That, to me, implies you look at people, judge them to be overweight and assume it is because of their eating habits.

If I am wrong, then I apologise for misunderstanding you. If that is what you think, then we must agree to disagree and I won't comment further.

That is not what I was saying at all and I think you are taking my comments slightly out of context. I am commenting on what the Chief Medical Officer is saying in her annual report. The whole point, again if you read the opening posts, is that because of things such as media portrayal and other daily influencing factors, many people who are overweight do not consider themselves to be. Fact. I do not believe I ever once actually said that I look at people and judge them to be overweight and assume that it is because of their eating habits but I would welcome you pointing out where I did say this. One thing I did say, however, was that being overweight is not necessarily down to eating and that there can be other factors such as medical conditions, treatments etc.
What I AM saying is that it is surely not a good thing if people who are clinically overweight do not consider themselves to be.

Errol. My cousin is considered to be morbidly obese, this is not due to over eating but as a result of the medication she has to take for her life threatening degenerating medical condition. She has tried so any diets over the years, they do not help he, in fact they have caused her stress and anxiety. Imagine sticking to a calorie controlled diet for weeks and months on end, and still not lose weight. Her weight problems are not down to the food she puts into her mouth. if she stopped taking all of the medication her weight would drastically be reduced, and she would become very ill and die.

Even her consultant has told her not to worry about her weight, her weight problems are something she has to live with.

my friend has been on steroids for nearly two years now to treat polymyalgia - she has gained an enormous amount of weight but there's little she can do until the polymyalgia goes away

Again, that is not what I am saying at all.

There are many people who are overweight due to their lifestyle rather than an illness, condition or medication, and yet do not consider themselves to be.

This is the group of people being referred to and yes, people should be comfortable with how they are but there are health issues to being overweight. This is very well documented!

Yes, there are people who are overweight due to a medical condition outside their immediate control, but as Errrol keeps pointing out, that isn't what this is about.

It is about those who are in denial about their weight, and as a result refuse to take any action. Bottom line is, if you consume more calories than you burn up you will put on weight You can deny it until you are blue in the face but it won't change the facts.....!

A relative of mine is a doctor in a large teaching hospital in charge of MRI and such. He is mournful about the ever increasing size of his patients some of whom won't fit in the scanner. MRI Scanners which can accommodate wider patients cost the earth and are not in the budget ...

He reckons that the fatal reason is not fast food and fizzy drinks - the British always liked fish and chips with a beer better than 7veg- but the TV remote controls and mobile phones.

If people still had to waddle backwards and forwards across the sitting room 20 times a day or more to tune the set or answer the phone he reckons that would halfway fix the problem. He is a great fan of XBox kinetic.

I tried it for 3 months and lost 5 kilos. Working out how to run the tv etc by buttons was tricky though and made android look easy. Finding the manual was even harder.
Oh how I wished I had not put the TV on the wall ...

Then with the latest mobile I can use it as tv remote control. The spirit is willing but ...
