There are quite a few lists online of foods that contain the largest numbers of calories. Apart from pure lard or pure vegetable oil, it seems peanut butter and dark chocolate rank highly on most lists.
On the drinks front I found an article in the Mail that claims that Baileys and Bacardi breezers are the worst liquid sources of calories; whilst another websites list of high calorie drinks looked like an advert for Starbucks.

oh well...

...there goes my lard, Bacardi, peanut butter and dark chocolate surprise cake with a Baileys topping then.

I watched a programme last night that said there is an 'obese' gene.......

As I don't really know what I am talking about perhaps a look at this link will explain why it is not always the fault of the person for putting on weight.

I have heard of that before and I am sure that there are occasions when it is down to genetics just like it can sometimes be down to a medical condition or treatment.

I wonder how much Dame Sally Davies was paid to write this report.

A person is a person, we come in all shapes and sizes, yet it is always the ones considered by some expert, researcher or whoever, to be overweight who get flack.

If anyone is unhappy with their weight they will know where to go for help and advice. How many more reports or articles stating the obvious do we need to see.

And to quote Errol
"I think the main point being made though was that too many people do not consider themselves to be overweight. They have to admit that to start with, before looking at what they are actually eating and this is where the comments by Dame Sally Davies apply about people considering being overweight or obese to be the norm when it clearly is not and should not be."

How rude and patronising is that??

I am trying to get better before I can do ANY exercise.

I've been seeing a physiotherapist every week for the last 5 weeks, I've had two cortisone injections (which haven't helped)..... and I'm going to see an acupuncturist next week.

We have a healthy diet 95% of the time.......... not too many "treats" like chocolate or ice-cream. I read the labels on most products to see the fat & sugar content.

KittytheLearnerCook Report 27 Mar 2014 20:40

Good luck with getting more mobile, I hope someone can help you Scozz.

My bugbear is that anyone taller, shorter or thinner than someone somewhere decrees is healthy or normal never has to justify themselves to anyone.............but be heavier, and it's always deemed to be their own fault for eating too much of the wrong type of food!!

Dermot Report 27 Mar 2014 20:50

Fat free is not the same as free fat.

I've no idea why I bother stating the obvious. It's just something I read recently about Queen Victoria who was openly mocked as the 'Famine Queen', in her propaganda-driven visit to Ireland of 1849.

Over-weight v. overweight, I suppose.

I need new clothes! I have a wardrobe full of things I can't wear. :-(

I heard there was a sale at Ray's Camping Centre....... I'm off to buy a tent.

Contrary to what Errol has reported ...................

there is now a report here that weighing more than the "average" is not necessarily bad.

It seems that every one has an ideal weight .................. and that might not be a size 6, it might be a size 12

It has been suggested that doctors here should pay more attention as to whether the patient is otherwise healthy before telling them that their BMI is too high.

This is not ignoring the fact of obesity, or the problems associated with obesity, but accepting the fact that some of us will never be a size 10 or size 12 ....................

but it is accepting of the fact that eating disorders are far too prevalent, believed to be largely due to the pressure to be "thin"

I would also point out that clothes over here are more likely to be made bigger only so that one has to buy a couple of sizes SMALLER than one really needs :-)

We discovered that when daughter tried on wedding dresses 15 years ago .................. she had to order a size that was 2 sizes below what she normally wore!

It apparently makes a bride feel better when she can say "my wedding dress is a size 8", than if she has to say "........... a size 12", which would be her real size.

I know that the size I take depends on the manufacturer ...................... I actually have 4 different sizes in my closet at the moment, and all fit the same! Some manufacturers are more generous in their cut, others are not at all generous!

Who actually defines who/ what is "normal" ?

Insurance companies use height/weight/male/female/age comparison tables in assessing policy premiums.

The chart shows minimum/average/maximum figures.

I remember a client of my husbands was refused insurance as she was very overweight. Someone had to tell her this! Eventually an employee who was also a friend of the client explained that she had been refused cover as she wasn't tall enough for her weight.

Even the 'lean' looking people can have internal fat around their vital organs from which many health problems start ... :-(

I have to scrutinise food labels because my husband is diabetic which is bad enough and he is considered obese so that is a constant battle.
Also I am on steroids and other meds I have been told I am obese too and that I won't be able to lose enough weight to be "normal" :-(

~`*`Jude`*`~ Report 30 Mar 2014 17:11

l am overweight probably by about 2 stone, maybe more. l do eat things l should'nt and l do need to go on a diet, l'm not like the people in the programme though, but l sure can see how they become so big. To me Fat is not normal, but for those that are large (sounds better than fat...although l am fat) because of health issues its a different thing.

But there are still alot of large people that eat rubbish foods, as this programme shows!!

l did'nt mention that TV proramme to have ago at people that have medical conditions or for those that have an eating problem. l thought it was interesting and l'll watch next weeks....hope l did'nt offend anyone??

jude

Edit....l also think there is alot of chemicals in the atmosphere, that can cause alot of medical complaints, which in turn could become a size issue for alot of people...does that make sense, gawd l hope so!! :)

Tenerife Sun

Tenerife Sun Report 30 Mar 2014 17:26

Jude I've seen this programme before and Ii is interesting. In one I saw it showed to the lengths SOME people will go to hide food. One person was in hospital with his food intake and weight being monitored prior to an operation to help him reduce his weight, may have been a gastric band I can't remember. Anyway he wasn't losing any weight at all on this controlled food intake regime and swore he was only eating the food he was being given by the hospital. In the end they put a CCTV camera in his room. His visitors were keeping him supplied with chocolate, cakes etc. what a waste of NHS money and resources.

ZZzzz

ZZzzz Report 30 Mar 2014 17:29

I seriously think it is something in the water too, as so many people are affected, that and how everything is mass produced so chemicals are everywhere and cannot avoided.
