Mrs Dale's Diary and The Archers were huge favourites for many years.

It was definitely the Goons that said 'he's fallen in the water' I remember CharlieDrake with another chap on the tv - Mick and Montmerency , not sure of the spelling, using the catch phrase ' hello my darlings :-)

Kay Starr.

I was afraid of Paul Robeson. His voice was so deep he sounded like a monster to me and I used to hide behind the sofa.

I remember Sparky & the magic piano....loved it. Yes, it was Guy Mitchell, couldn't recall his name.Weren't Alma Cogan and Petula Clark big favourites around the same time?
I didn't live in Forest Gate, just went to St.Angela's Ursuline Convent.Lived in East Ham for 15 years.Came to Holland in '62.Strangely enough, I don't remember the Princess Alice or Spotted Dog, even though we used to go every week to the roller skating rink. Were they pubs?
I could have sworn that Charlie Drake (couldn't stand him) said the immortal words "he's fall-ed in der water....Was he known for saying "hello my darlings"?
To this day, I can still sing the 'words' of the Ying Tong Song...(spelling?)
There was a song that was popular way back called Ghost Riders in the Sky, which scared me stiff.

He's fall-ed in der Water was from the goon show........eccles or bluebottle would come out with it

thought for a while it was from a show that had some "children" in it and an older one would translate what the baby was trying to say............

Forest Gate gel,

you MUST remember the Princess Alice, and round the corner the Roller skating Rink.......Sad to see that the Spotted Dog is in Dire straits though......

what about Sparky and the " talking piano"?

Hoolie skirt? sounds like the sort of thing Alma Cogan would have sung.....

but it was Guy Mitchell...........

I loved reading all your reminiscences, makes me feel rather nostalgic-in a good way.
Am puzzled how someone can be a ventriloquist in a radio program though.Educating Archie....'what a job for anyone' etc...Kennth Williams was a scream in Round the Horn, as were the characters Julian & Sandy.Talk about double entendre...it was quite daring for the '60's....
I am delighted that you have found out the title of that 'song' Bobtanian, at last...I was so certain Norman Wisdom & Joyce Grenfell were yawning all the time.
Can't rmemeber which channel or program it was where you could send in a request for a record to be played for someone, but I was amazed to hear my name & my mother's name one saturday,.I had sent a card asking for She wears red feathers and a hoolie hoolie (spelling?) skirt to be played for my mother..can't recall the singer's name. Who remembers Bootsie & Snudge? I went to school in Forest Gate in the late '50's, heard that Bill Fraser owned a sweet shop fairly near there.Went with my friend to see him...he got annoyed when I asked it he was Snudge....poor man, he was probably fed up to the teeth with people asking this.
There was a children's request program every saturday when I was a kid/young teen, the most popular song asked for was The Laughng Policeman, next was about a little train trying to get up a steep incline...kept saying to itself "I think I can"..... lots of quite innocent programs...

Thank you all once again for the memories.

I might well be wrong but I thought I once read that Jean Metcalfe and Cliff Michelmore always took their holidays on the Isle of Wight because Jean Metcalfe couldn't travel. I think he might have been in Germany because they also mentioned that she travelled into the BBC from her home in Dorking or it could have been Woking.

She died fairly recently and I believe he still lives in Petersfield.

There was also a man called Bill Crozier who sometimes presented Family Favourites and I can remember Alma Cogan being on it once.

I remember Julie Andrews as a 12 year old singing on Workers Playtime.
Think her mother Barbara played the piano.
Julie had a 4 octave voice and was billed as a child prodigy
Her stepfather was Ted Andrews and I think they had a vaudeville act..ted and Barbara Andrews.
This was the lead up to her debut and fame.
She then went on to sing in a comedy show...can't remember which, but like Pearl Carr and Teddy Johnson and others they used to break up the comedy with a singer or light entertainment.

we hadn't been in BAOR (BFPO 20) long when one Sunday early '60,

a request was played for one of our lot......it was "Sloop John B"

The " I wanna go home" song!!!

"I feel so broke up, I wanna go home!"
