So glad Tom is doing so well Joeva, and hope he will feel lots better when his blood count is back up to scratch as well. Hope the girls enjoy the festival. Your granddaughter abroad travelling must have been so worried - being so far away when a loved one is unwell is really scary especially after all she and your family have already had to cope with. I am sure your daughter is looking after Tom and making sure things go well now.

Take care of yourself too, you are obviously much needed by your family but think of your own health too

Sorry to be a bit tardy in thanking you for your good wishes today but have been a bit busy with shopping and getting organised to look after Tom and family.

He is seems ok but looks very pale and tired as he lost a lot of blood because of an unfortunate happening during their attempts to do the stent. He is on iron tablets so may be in a week or two his blood count will be back to normal.

My granddaughters are pleased he is back home again because they have been so looking forward for the last few months to the V Festival this weekend and of course would not have gone if their dad was still in hospital.

So much has happened in the last 5 days that it all seems so surreal now, but upwards and onwards !

Thanks everyone for all the information you gave me on your own experience of family or friends that have had a successful outcome after this operation it has been a great comfort to me and has gone a long way to alleviate my anxiety.

Hi Jo, I haven't been here for a while, so have just seen your thread, what a scary time you have all had, but so pleased that the outcome is good. I'm sure you will look after him well, and that you will enjoy doing it.

Good News ! Tom is going home today, he has progressed so well that they are discharging him earlier than we thought :-D

Of course, still a while before he gets back to normal but so happy for him and 'the girls'.

I will being going to stay for a time to help out and make sure he doesn't attempt too much too soon. :-)

Joeva, my OH had an emergency quadruple by-pass in 1985 when he was only 49. It was a huge success and he is still here at the age of 76.

So pleased to know that your son-in-law is doing well. :-)

Just had an update from my g.daughter, Tom is doing great they have already moved him out of I.T.U back to his room :-D She said he looks good and is being encouraged by the nursing staff to be out of bed and moving around.

He will be further cheered as another of his girls will be back from holiday in a couple of hours and will be going in to see him :-) His third daughter is travelling for 6 months and is in Malaysia at the moment but was considering flying back until we managed to reassure her that all was well.

Just to mention, it was his youngest daughter that had to sign the consent form before the op on Friday, I felt so sorry for her having the responsibility to have to do that.......

Hoping that Tom is feeling a little more comfortable today and you and his daughters are less anxious. Sending positive thoughts to you all for today.

What a worrying time for you all but this is quite a common procedure and I know several neighbours in their mid 70's who have had this CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft) operation and they have all made a remarkable recovery and are able to carry on after recovering, feeling even better than before.

Keep your chin up, it is early days yet but I hope your son in law improves each day. He sounds to be having good care in the hospital and is sure to be back home with his girls before too long.

Tom has had a coronary artery bypass grafting using veins from his legs as you said.

dad had angiplasty.

angiplasty is less invasive(dad had just suffered a heart attack) and the recovery time is quicker than bypass grafting.but with angiplasty you usually need it done more than once due to the artery becoming blocked again(hence dad having it done three times up to now)
bypass grafting doesnt usually need doing again but the recovery takes longer.

dad had a bad blockage piggy backed using a mesh stent,they bypass the blockage with the stent so invasive surgery is not needed( dad had a second heart attack during the second lot of angiplasti when he was 64) so invasive surgery was not an option for him.

'Piggyback the blockage' I don't know if this is the same procedure as taking a vein from the leg and grafting it on to the blocked artery so the blood flows normally. If so this is what they Tom has had done.

It is good to see so many of you have known friends and family who have had a by-pass operation and how beneficial it has been for their health. :-D

Here's wishing Tom a good recovery Joeva.

So pleased that Tom is now recovering from his op.
I have a friend about to undergo the same procedure within the next few weeks.

Father-in-law had it done at 80+ and led a very full active life afterwards, including flying off to see family in Italy and New Zealand.

I hope Tom heals well and recovers soon.
