I think life is wonderful when you have time to slice a mushroom.

Are there really tinned sprouts?

I once worked in a holiday camp where they served dried cabbage and have to confess that I do buy ready chopped garlic in jars.

Can't quie imagine what tinned broad beans must be like.

Oooeer Jude a new chopper ;-)

Sharron can't say I'm over keen on the chopped garlic in a jar but lazy chillies I'm never without.

Sharron

Sharron Report 19 Oct 2012 23:49

I don't use chilli's at all (delicate little mouth hem, hem) and am far too bloody idle to crush garlic myself.

Prefer it to garlic paste as a tube of that only usually lasts me one or two applications.

Maybe slicing them means thay can pack the same weight in a smaller tray. That would reduce transport and storage cost as the same weight would take up less room.......just a thought. :-)

Our local supermarket has been selling sliced mushrooms for years ~ also bags of shredded carrot, cabbage, onion etc.

I don't like most frozen/tinned veggies (especially green beans!) usually buy fresh, especially from the local farmers' markets.

Easy way to slice mushrooms? The gadget you use to slice a hard boiled egg! Also great for slicing strawberries.

I don't buy ready-sliced things (no idea how long they've been sitting on the shelf). I have arthritis in my hands, but have worked out easier way to do some things.

Robert, I too buy the frozen mushrooms, peppers and onions because they are handy to have when you might not get out to buy fresh or need to rustle up a meal quickly, mine get cooked in the wok to add to pasta, or an omelette to make the meal more nutritous and filling. There is no waste and they last longer than fresh stuff so are fairly cost effective.

There are a lot of products where the size is reduced but the price stays the same as before, sausages have all gone down in weight from 454 g to 400g.

Yes I have bought frozen sliced mushrooms for the same reason as Liz, frozen veg is as nutricious as fresh according to many reports I have seen. But not sure if sl;iced fresh mushrooms would last fresh as long as whole.

Scozz that is a good tip, must try it.

Sliced mushrooms have been on sale here in Oz for as far back as I can remember. They are, of course, a little more costly than whole mushies which are pre-packed - and both of those are dearer than those which you pick yourself and put in a paper bag......but they are always on sale and always nice and fresh, so somebody must buy them! Some people don't look at cost - only convenience.

Sliced mushrooms have been on sale for years here too but they come with a liberal supply of the grit they are grown in !

Sharron

Sharron Report 21 Oct 2012 00:16

No,it's not grit they grow them in but it does rhyme.

Malcolm Report 21 Oct 2012 09:23

Mushroom Compost may include all sorts of stuff but there is no raw "material" in it so don't worry.

I buy sliced mushroom if I fancy an omelette...they're clean and convenient. I like the button ones whole or chunks for a stew or fry up.

Processed foods - especially canned - have added sugars, salts, preservatives and usually a lot of water which you're paying for - specially as someone commented frozen rice! Fresh is much better, healthier and usually cheaper. :-)

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 21 Oct 2012 10:06

Sharron in Tenerife it does appear to be grit. And some lettuce there is grown in it too, awful job to wash out.

AnninGlos Report 21 Oct 2012 10:07

Whoever mentioned slicing with a hard boiuled egg slicer, I tried it and it works as long as the mushroom is not too big.

Morning:)

My new chopper chops up onions a treat for a casserole and nuts for the birds:)

Usually chop my own veg, only thing l will buy is prepared salad because l like the variety in the bag, although the bags are too big and they don't last:(
l also buy frozen broad beans, peas and sweetcorn:)

Julia

Julia Report 21 Oct 2012 10:40

Jude, Morning, I too buy the bags of prepared salad leaves in the non growning season, for the same reason, the variety. I also buy frozen peas and sweetcorn, but usually manage to freeze enough of our own broad beans to last through to the following season.
I have never bought frozen chopped onions or cabbage. Wonders what they are like.

Always prefer frozen veg to tinned, as the tinned variety taste completely different from the fresh, but frozen not alot different. Also nutrition wise frozen is better.

Would think, that as soon as any veg is chopped, sliced, whatever, it would start to lose nutrients fairly quickly. Occasionally buy, if pushed for time, but prefer the good old fashioned whole veg.,!

Have never been a gadget sort of person, as most things can be done with a good knife and pair of kitchen scissors. By the way, tinned sprouts sound disgusting, have never seen them tho.,!
