Jacqueline, many thanks for this tip, which I will use in the future. I think it will be invaluable at say Christmas time, when you want to have some salad greenery in, just in case, but everything comes in big bags.

Many,many thanks

Buy frozen vege. ie. sweetcorn, peas, broad beans but never onions....I slice or chop huge onions, divide into small separate freezer bags, then all ready for using in recipes. Have cooked with frozen turnip & carrots, useful in stews, but tinned sprouts? why would you:-S

Haven't ever bought sliced mushrooms not a hard job imo

Mau xx

BC you're geet rich lolol <3

I saw that tip for putting kitchen paper towel in with salad to stop it going manky so quickly.

I also buy the shredded cabbage sometimes to use with a bag of mixed stirfry veg, Tesco used to do an offer to buy three bags of various stirfry mixes and cabbage for a reduced total price so I have bought those. When I am on my own and o.h. on late shift I often do a big stirfry of those veggies with a piece of salmon cooked in the wok first and then move it to add veg, it's a very quick and easy nutritious meal - sometimes have a jacket potato with it too (done in the microwave so no need to turn oven on and waste gas. A little bit of soft cheese with garlic and herbs and I am well fed and happy. O.h. doesn't like salmon whatever way I cook it, he's not into any fish except cod or similar done in batter or breadcrumbs.

I was in Sainsburys one day and heard this woman tell her hubby to go get the tinned sprouts, I asked what they tasted like and she said she loved them. Well I thought I would give them a try and got myself a tin, but they weren't very nice at all and wouldn't buy them again. I used to buy the frozen sprouts with chestnuts at Christmas but now I get fresh sprouts and a vacuum pack of chestnuts and serve them together. Yummy! Even my son will eat them at Christmas but not at other times of the year lol

Yes the cabbage and leek is good for stir fries

SheilaSomerset Report 21 Oct 2012 21:08

I sometimes buy a small pack of sliced cabbage. Sainsburys do one with white and green or cabbage and leek. It's not my favourite veg but do fancy it now and again, the pack is just right for 2, and a large cabbage just hangs around too long :-D.

Sounds like a good tip thanks for that

With reference to the packets of salad being too big and going off - open the packet and put a couple of sheets of kitchen roll inside, then peg the top of the bag together. The paper absorbs excessive moisture and the salad lasts much longer. Think I saw this tip on TV.

Got to find a tin of sprouts - for research purposes.

I want to know if they, ahem, 'melt in the mouth' like my mums used to. :-0

I like mine a tad 'al dente' :-D

Have seen all sorts of fruit and veg ready sliced up and surprised so many people buy it. Never seen tinned sprouts yuk. Gotta be fresh veg for me everytime

Got the best gadget ever cause I've got that funny tightening of the veins in my right palm which can be so painful peeling spuds etc.

My OH is the best chopper I know. Before he retired it all just arrived on his plate and had never peeled a carrot or parsnip in his life. Now he looks after all that side of things for me. opens jars and all sorts. Nobody tell him you can buy it already prepared LOL. Gotta earn his keep somehow

;-) ;-)

Ann,
To explain, . When i posted my message, i actually thought, on reading it, should i put down that i realised some people had a problem cutting veg., However, i decided to leave it out., thinking that people would know i was aware of that obvious fact.

,I was quite expecting something of the sort, and when you posted it just sort of proved to me what i was thinking. That is all. I have not taken umbrage or offence and i did not mean my post to be offensive, just to put mypoint across,

Whaaat???? Just letting people know why I was slicing a muchroom with an egg slicer. Why do people take things said as being personal to them? If I want to address somebody I usually used their name.

Oh Dear
Just because i said i was not a gadget person, didnt mean, i was not aware of the fact of not everying is able to chop their own veg. etc.,
I just stated a simple fact of sharing something about myself.

Now this IS PC gone crazy.!!

Sue

Edit. Life is too short to stuff a mushroom, and also too short to disagree over a mushroom. !

I think using the egg slicer was suggested for those who have a problem using a knife because of arthritis etc.

I did buy some already shredded cabbage yesterday because it was reduced, used it last night and it tasted very fresh lightly steamed.

Sue

Sue Report 21 Oct 2012 12:04

Always prefer frozen veg to tinned, as the tinned variety taste completely different from the fresh, but frozen not alot different. Also nutrition wise frozen is better.

Would think, that as soon as any veg is chopped, sliced, whatever, it would start to lose nutrients fairly quickly. Occasionally buy, if pushed for time, but prefer the good old fashioned whole veg.,!

Have never been a gadget sort of person, as most things can be done with a good knife and pair of kitchen scissors. By the way, tinned sprouts sound disgusting, have never seen them tho.,!

Jude, Morning, I too buy the bags of prepared salad leaves in the non growning season, for the same reason, the variety. I also buy frozen peas and sweetcorn, but usually manage to freeze enough of our own broad beans to last through to the following season.
I have never bought frozen chopped onions or cabbage. Wonders what they are like.
