stuff a mushroom. But now it seems it is too short to slice them. Can you believe that Tesco are selling fresh mushrooms ready sliced? :-S

LOL :-D Yes I noticed these on sale quite a while ago but glazed over them.

I suppose it could (and probably would) be argued that they comply with Elf and Safety. You can cut yourself on a knife you know! LOL :-D :-D

Those of us with arthritic hands still like to cook, so being able to buy sliced/grated vegetables is wonderful.

Dizzi (who is sitting in my kitchen) has no co-ordination so is quite dangerous when welding a knife.

Ann, they have been selling them sliced for ages. So have other supermarkets.

I'm sure people with arthritis managed to cook before the sliced mushroom went on sale.
My arthritic late mil managed to cut her veg ok.

I wonder what the real reason is for this product?

Would a mandolin (kitchen) help those with problem hands?

you might also find that weight for weight, the sliced ones are dearer than the un-prepacked mushrooms.....
but to confuse you even more the unsliced and sliced are often in different weights.......

*blushes.....have bought some. No excuse, just pure laziness! :-D :-D

Porkie_Pie Report 19 Oct 2012 13:57

The reason for most products that are either processed or part processed is because of quality and maximising profits

veg and other food stuffs that are of a lower quality can have the offending bits cut out as part of the process which minimizes waste

That's not laziness BC - somebody has to do Hussar Watch :-D

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 19 Oct 2012 14:03

Roy, that was my guess. I just wondered if they deteriorated when sliced and if tinned would be better if you can't slice because of problems with your hands.

Still got to open the tin though Ann.

Actually, tinned mushrooms are horrible, I wouldn't wish them on anyone :-\

:-D <3 :-D @BC. I know these things :-D

Porkie_Pie Report 19 Oct 2012 14:28

AnninGlos, such products are a god send to some people but it's not by design, More by accident than anything,

Tinned produce is generally of even lower quality than the chopped veg, And yes anything you do such as chopping or washing veg will make it deteriorate quicker but with tinned they use additives/preservatives to maintain quality but if you have problems with your hands then even opening a tin can be difficult "i assume"

I have over the years worked for everyone from farmers to packers and processors through to supermarkets so i have a reasonable knowledge of where food comes from and what happens to it in all stages right up to it ending up on the supermarket shelf

I only ever use fresh veg never processed or tinned

Roy

Edit, Not to happy to have additives/preservatives in my food when it can be avoided

My pet no no is tinned sprouts. Can´t imagine what they would be like because I find frozen ones inedible.
Another favourite for laziness is frozen cooked rice.

See! I said it was an Elf and Safety thing.

Can't have people jabbing themselves in the eye when they wipe the tears away if they chop raw onions :-0 :-0
