AnnG- that is the face that had my OH,Son & myself feeding it every day over Christmas until my Son rushed in all worried because she wouldnt eat her tea...6 meals a day !!!!! She looks starved doesn't she? ( been on a diet since Christmas, you should see the face now) :-D

No RR I don't think there are people who in general have a calming effect on everyone. Sometimes, kind though these people may really be, their 'calming' effect may well be a wind up to other people.

If someone expresses the same feelings of others, then that person is recognised as an understanding person, simply because they have shared opinions with the listener/reader .

What I admire is the person who can express themselves, either here on the boards or face to face in an everyday situation and put their point across and encourages me to see their point of view, even if at the end of their opinion we agree to differ. They don't have to be kind people or cynics. I have agreed with cynics occasionally and I have disagreed with so called 'calming people' simply because I haven't believed a word that has been written in their post . -jl

Janet I think there is a difference , in my mind anyway even if I can't quite express it , between the type of person you describe and the type of person I meant.

There ARE people who say 'calming' things, pour oil on troubled water, who wind me up more than the ones who are directly antagonistic to me...but it wasn't them I meant.

If I can go back to the 'cake' analogy.... there are cupcakes covered in swirls of sugar paste icing and topped with sweet jellies and ultra sweet stuff, which look very pretty but taste so sickly sweet it makes one gag... and then there are rather plainer ones with a little circle of glace icing on the top which are 'satisfying', just 'sweet enough', just filling 'enough'.

personally I gravitate more often to the sparky people with a quick and sometimes sharp tongue, who argue well and persistently...if not always gently :-D but it is nice to sometimes have the really genuinely 'thoughtful' people to provide some balance and remind one that you can speak softly but still be heard.

and the calming kind people are not the ones who set out to be so, they are the ones to whom it comes naturally it is 'just how they are'.

Being of an astrological persuasion I still think it is where our mercury is positioned that decides whether we gel with someone or how they appear to us. Now that will get the cynics started.......lol.-jl

Seriously, there are people who wade into a ruck with fists flying and guns blazing, and there are others who are the voice of reason and can calm things down, not necessarily by agreeing or disagreeing with whatever point is being fought over, but just by reason.

Then again, and this comes through knowing the people involved, there is the person who can recognise when an individuals 'blue touch paper' has been lit and can douse the explosion before it happens, which is to the better good of the person about to explode!

Janet :-D I have found I get on especially well with Aries, now whether that is because my main influences as a child, mum and brother, were both Aries, so I 'get ' them, or whether it is because it is a fire sign like myself or 'coincidence' ...

Rose, I'd love to but I'm kind of busy sorting out my bedroom atm which, as I'm in the middle of going through things, deciding what to keep/chuck/ebay, looks like a hurricane has hit it :-D

my house has that "twice burgled" look at the moment but I am busy in the garden - just having a breather - it's flippin' hot out there!!!!

always took a long time to clean my son;s bedroom - so many interesting books under the bed!!!!

I used to have to tie a piece of string to the door handle of my son's room when he was home...so I could find my way out again....

Mind, if he lost anything, and went on one of his teenage strops about it...I'd usually find it under his bed...along with the missing dinner plate, half a packet of crisps, the TV remote (often the lost item), some unmentionable stuff and a few...enlightening...magazines....and 'the other sock(s) matching the pair(s) with missing ones. All of which he would deny putting there, while claiming to have searched under the bed with a fine tooth comb and it's 'SO NOT THERE!'.

In fact, an often repeated phrase in our house, apart from 'turn that music down!' was....what's this then...scotch mist?' :-D
