Hi Ann

Hope you're both well.

Has there's been an improvement since going back to the dentist for your OH?

Pat :-)

AnninGlos Report 11 Apr 2012 14:48

The dentist only did a very minor adjustment and said OH needs to wait a bit longer for his mouth to subside from the extractions. OH did say he thought it was a bit better after going. he has instructions to go back if it still hurts after a week. He has gone away to golf today so I shall be interested to know how he got on. At least it will hopefully build up his confidence in the teeth as He'll have to talk to people other than me. He is with friends so that is fine. He decided not to stop for a meal though, that is the main thing he has problems with. I think he is worrying a bit because we go to Tenerife in a couple of weeks and one of the pleasures of our 4 weeks there is eating. So far I have been doing things I know he can manage like mince and rice (although that was a bit of a problem as it got under the plate as I've said before, mashed potatoes is better. Tonight he has decided to try oven grilled fish fillets and oven chips so we shall see. :-)

Ann I am sure he will be absolutely fine when he adjusts. I remember when I first had dentures fitted (about 20 years ago), it took me a while to get accustomed to them. And, as others have said, the bottom set is more difficult than the top, but the mouth soon stops sulking at the new invasion. :-D and the rest is just a matter of gaining confidence.

Tell OH that I have been flashing mine for years now and they haven't fallen out once!

Thanks BC I'll tell him that. The joys of getting older. Even worse when it isn't you but the male half!!!! Still I have had a teeth free day :-D but he has just phoned to say he is on his way home -about an hour. :-) :-)

His mouth with and without his denture will feel very different, the more he wears it the easier it becomes and the more confident he will be.

When you go on holiday take something like Bonjella just in case he has a sore area. A fixative is also advisable.

I can understand why the dentist is reluctant to take too much off. The area where the teeth were removed from will alter a lot in the next few weeks, it will even out first, then absorbtion will carry on but at a slower pace until a new denture is required.

Soft foods and soups are ideal for now but he needs confidence restoring. He'll get there tell him but not tomorrow. He should find a big difference by the time he comes back from his holiday.

Enjoy your holiday, hope you get plenty of sun and food.

Pat :-D

We did had stewed steak last night cooked in the slow cooker, he managed most of it ok but was beaten by a couple of pieces. As you say pat, it is confidence. As I pointed out to him this morning, we were talking about something and he was getting quite animated about it, he was talking normally. later when he was thinking about what he was doing he was not talking so clearly. Yes he knows why the dentist has only taken a bit off. I have bought some gel today. did have some in the cabinet but had it a while so got some fresh, he also has fixative given by the dentist but I think that will work better when his gums settle down.

Thanks for your input and I am sure we will enjoy our holiday as usual. :-D

Ann
It may be that his gums need time to heal and to contract to where they want to be. until then his dentures may be a bad fit and need adjusting from time to time.

I broke a front tooth in my early teens and had a jacket crown on it that was renewed after about 25 years cos the gum had receded and it was causing pain. The new crown again lasted over30 years although the gum receded further . One time I noticed a black spot on the gum line on one side and Xrays revealed the stump inside was rotting. I had it removed and opted for a bridge over both front teeth and the tooth to the left of the bad one,
My dentist fitted a temporary bridge that was on for 6 months to let the gums settle and do any receding it wanted to. The new bridge was then fitted.

So guess your Hubby's gums need to settle down before he gets a good denture fit

Yes, I am sure you are right Shirley, he will go back to the dentist early August as that is when our next check up is due, hopefully it will have settled down by then. Actually he has come in from golf and said he had a good day, nobody seemed to notice anything about his teeth when he talked and he managed to eat a toasted tea cake while out (by breaking it up first). So his confidence has been built up a bit now. :-)
