OH has had to have a partial lower denture. He had about 5 teeth out on Thursday and the denture put straight in. He is having a lot of trouble adapting to it, even with fixative it is not staying put and he can't chew anything. I know he is going back on Tuesday which I assume is for adjustment. One problem is that he now has teeth where he has not had any for ages and he keeps hitting the denture teeth with the top teeth. And he can't talk properly. Can you imagine the pantomime with me not hearing properly and him unable to speak clearly?

Has anyone had experience of a partial lower denture and if so, any tips please? :-D

Not really Joan Lol!! Yes I am sure they are more difficult, I have a top partial one but mine is on clips. His isn't and of course there is not a lot of suction. His is across the front though, if it was the back I think he'd give up too. It is making his frustrated because he can't speak though.

Ann I have a part denture and it didn't fit so I went back and the dentist altered them. I couldn't eat either, mine is a top one, my dentist said they always need a bit of alteration so he should go back, the're no good as they are.

I had partial dentures until I went onto greater things (no not implants) just more of the same. Your OH should get used to them eventually but only if they fit properly. Hopefully any adjustments needed may improve things but I do believe lower dentures are more difficult. They may not have got the bite quite right and may need filing down a bit.

Thank you, yes Vera I think they need filing down as that is what dislodges them, when he hits the back tooth. Caz, he has an appointment on Tuesday so I am hoping that will help. If he doesn't get on with them, not sure what to do, he won't go without, he may be 73 but he is still proud of his appearance.

I hope he gets sorted then, mine are so comfortable now I forget they are there, thats after going back a few times for alterations.

I do think upper ones 'stick' more easily. Mine are actually on a clip these days but I had them when I was 21 (abcess after pregnancy) and they were just on a plate then, had them for 12 years, had a second set from 1973 until last year then new ones, even they had to be filed down at first but try explaining that to Mr impatient who likes his food. :-D

Did you read the article (I saw it yesterday on the Daily Mail site) about mrsa on dentures Ann? Was a scary article saying that microwaving your denture for 3 minutes once a week would deal with it. Must say I checked the date lol :-D

AnninGlos Report 8 Apr 2012 13:18

No, didn't see that Lyndi, Have had a top denture for 50 years now, no problems so far. didn't even see it in the DM and I have the paper too. will have to check.

Re mrsa-I can't help but think if some plastic dentures were put in the microwave, would they come out in one blob.?

Just reminds me of my mum's neighbours years ago. She had been told that it was good to soak the dentures in bleach overnight, that they would come out looking extra white. Her husband did the same. The following morning he put his teeth in and was quite angry that the bleach had shrunk his teeth, until his wife told him he was wearing her teeth not his. -jl

Suppose they could go in a steam steriliser like I use for granddaughters bottle :-D (the bottle and teat come out looking the same as when they went in) but is it necessary I ask myself :-S

Had to smile at the tale of the wrong teeth ;-) :-D
