Diamonds-R-A-Girls-Best-Friend Report 12 Apr 2012 20:41

Susan with numbers.
We have a reservoir and only pay for water that we pump out of the river, we can only do this through the winter months and then only when the river reaches a certain level.

Well fancy that! I was under the impression that it belonged to the water board...after all...don't they charge the farmers for rainfall in the reservoirs ?...or am I being thick ( don't answer that )

Susan wivnumbers,

In the 21st century, an important degree of personal freedom remains. Almost everyone who owns land in the UK is entitled to extract water from a borehole or well for their own use, without any license or permission being required (within generous, quantified, limits).

I have a well...I wonder if the water is mine or the water board's. I have often wondered.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 12 Apr 2012 14:53

I wonder if water is more of a problem since more people concreted/bricked/tarmaced over their front gardens. I know there is a law now that means you have to leave a small part open to catch the draining water, but a lot were done before that came into being. The rain now just bounces off and runs down the drains instead of soaking into the soil.

Im disabled and have a blue badge but I don't even own a hosepipe....I use a watering can and have a water butt...I also recycle my washing up water and put a bowl in the shower with me to catch the excess water!! :-D

We actually get a discount because the surface water goes into a separate system, into the river, instead of the foul water sewer which means it does not have to go through the sewage treatment works.

I suspect it's because the water company charge you for the water that comes from your property but would have to give you a rebate if your water was redirected into a soak-away

BrianW Report 12 Apr 2012 05:40

Why don't more houses have soak-aways for surface water?
The main sources of water are rivers and boreholes,
When it rains and it goes down a drain, the water rapidly goes into the nearest river which then floods and it's not there long enough to be captured into reservoirs.
With a soak-away the water goes into the soil, the rivers don't flood and the water either goes into the aquifer and can be extracted later by a borehole or else percolated slowly into the river where it can be drawn off over a longer period.

didnt know that mind you I cant water the garden as cant stand and carry the watering can so leave it to hubby mind you grass is a disaster after having chicken on it, dog on it and trampoline so no point in watering it.

Are you saying you are capable of using a watering can, but as your partner has a blue badge its ok to use the hose as long as they do it?

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 5 Apr 2012 19:13

People have been mentioning that they don't think it right to 'grass people up' for breaking a regulation because it attracts a fine. If they continued after a quiet word in their ear/jocular comment, why not?

When the last Drought Order was in place in 2006, only ONE person was fined - every one else was sent and took notice of a Yellow (warning) letter.

Personally, if I saw someone other than a Blue Badge holder, washing their car or watering an established lawn with a hose more than once, I'd be inclined to make that call.

Drought Orders (Hosepipe bans) are covered by the Flood and Water Management Act 2010

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 5 Apr 2012 18:04

This may be controversial but I think to be fair, if there is a hosepipe ban, those with blue badges should really only water vegetables and fruit etc, food stuff. The lawn will recover from a dry spell and so will most flowers. :-)

ally6740 Report 5 Apr 2012 17:43

i wont have to worry about the hose pipe ban ....my partner has a blue badge but im making him water the garden......knowing my neibours will take pics of me using the hose pipe just to see me get fined :(

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 5 Apr 2012 17:11

Sadly I suspect there will equally be many elderly people who are unable to carry a watering can who do not have a blue badge, they will be the ones who will be upset when their veg dies. I hope they have some friendly neighbours to carry the watering can for them.
