I agree with everything that Jude has said , where me and him are concerned. It was nice to see a few of the youngens this morning at work going on about their cards and flowers . <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

Couldn't get over in Cheltenham, not in a flower shop but on a barrow, bunches of red roses (very pretty ) for £25. Who walks along the pavement and thinks 'Oh I'll just spend £25 on a bunch of those'?

We don't buy cards these days, gave up many years ago, although as I was making cards I did make one for him this year. And we went out to lunch which was nice, but to be honest we would probably have gone out to lunch anyway. :-D

I didn't take it as criticism or otherwise Island tbh lol...just couldn't understand where you were coming from. Still don't if I'm honest but hey ho.....doesn't matter...no harm done x :-D

Island Report 14 Feb 2012 14:55

Well I think we're all agreed that Valentines day is too commercialised and none of us need a particular day to express love to our partners :-D

Muffy, I'm sorryyou don't get what I was saying. It certainly wasn't a criticism and I'm not suggesting you are obliged to do or not do anything. I'm not into all the claptrap around Halloween so I ignore it, not because I'm obliged to but because I can't be @rsed with it. :-D It was just a joke :-\

My OH thinks the same...waste of time and money.
If he came in with flowers tonight...after 38 yr,I would wonder what he has been up to lol.

i think muffy is entitled to expres her opinion on valentines day, without people mocking her,

if im in a relationship i stretch to a card and i do expect one back,

everything is hiked up, and i would much rather i got flowers spontaniously than because "someone" decided i should get them today

I'm just wondering where these people are who get sucked in by commercialism and only being romantic on 14th Feb are :-S :-S I don't see them on Prickles fun thread.

I celebrate today because it is my birthday!!

Love to you all

Saint Valentine (in Latin, Valentinus) is the name of several in all martyred saints of ancient Rome. The name "Valentine", derived from valens (worthy, strong, powerful), was popular in Late Antiquity. Of the Saint Valentine whose feast is on February 14, nothing is known except his name and that he was buried on the Via Flaminia north of Rome on February 14, he was born on April 16. It is even uncertain whether the feast of that day celebrates only one saint or more saints of the same name. For this reason this liturgical commemoration was not kept in the Catholic calendar of saints for universal liturgical veneration as revised in 1969. But "Martyr Valentinus the Presbyter and those with him at Rome" remains in the list of saints proposed for veneration by all Catholics.

In the Eastern Orthodox Church, Saint Valentine the Presbyter is celebrated on July 6, and Hieromartyr Saint Valentine (Bishop of Interamna, Terni in Italy) is celebrated on July 30. Notwithstanding that, conventionally, members of the Greek Orthodox Church named Valentinos (male) or Valentina (female) celebrate their name on February 14
