I was more of a yeller than a smacker - however there were three rules - all to do with safety and if they broke them they got a quick smack on the bottom (not a bare one). Rules were - do not touch kettle, do not pull fireguard away and do not go to play in someone's house before telling Mummy or Daddy.

Don't think a smack which is a quick chastisement needs to be banned. Discipline has disappeared from life and there are those in our society who do not have respect for anyone. I know a teacher who loves her work but is seriously thinking of giving up because of bad language etc., (5 yr olds) and she is not allowed to pick up a child who falls and hurts itself when a quick 'there there' and a cuddle would fix.

I never smacked my two sons .a stern telling off was enough ..I wasnt smacked as a child .just had to get that look of my late Dad .hmm x Barbra

disipline hasnt gone out the window, ya can still dicipline your children without hurting them,

society hasnt changed because people dont smack there kids, i no kids who get a dam good hiding, n still disrespect people, i also know children who arent smacked who also disrespect people.

iv never smacked my son but he knows the rules and he follows them he is still disciplined, just not by me hitting him, i find there is no need for it, as other ways work,

I found that non smacking worked better with my eldest Stray..but my youngest is far more head strong and hedonistic than she is and does benefit from the short sharp shock.

All kids are different which is why I think it's important for us, as parents, to have all options open x

yeah defo hun, but i dot belive for one minute that not being able to smack your children will make children behave bad, and swear, thats just silly, :-D

No I don't think it will either...but gaining control over a dangerous situation is often invaluable x

I am not making anymore comments on this thread apart from .you do what you have to do to sort your children out ..you are the parents !!!.parent .i dont believe in smacking .my opinion .

I'm a full time Mum and here for them on tap....yet I still agree with smacking...........**edit***...(within boundaries)???

****how very odd...come to look in on this thread this afternoon and the comment to which the above was a reply to has been altered...so this now makes absolutely no sense...probably best to ignore it now *sighs*

thank you every one for your comments,we have agoodmix of people for and against smacking children..all i can say really is that i smacked my children,it didnt do them any harm,but i can understand the comments given against smacking(mentioned on my earlier posts)we as parents must do what we feel is right for our children. :-D :-D

Yes I read about that. I hope somebody can sort it out given that it seems to be more than a sharp slap. And why, if corporal punishment is banned in schools are they exempt if theya re part time schools? I don't understand the reasoning.

Very bad idea to ban it in my opinion.

I don't agree with smacking children generally, but sometimes when a child is totally out of control a short, sharp shock may be necessary. My mum smacked me very infrequently when I was young, and she hated doing it, but she felt she had to at the time and I respect that.

But a ban seems to be just further infringement by the state into our private lives. Will there be children taking their parents to court for a slap on the wrist?

I understand that the ban is an attempt to prevent cruelty to children, but I seriously doubt that parents who abuse their children will stop because of it - child abuse is already illegal, yet it still goes on.

It just seems that this ban will punish those parents who are not by nature violent or cruel to their children, but occasionally feel the need to physically check them.

i can see were your coming from kinda taking cntrol of the parents from there children, but as someone who doesnt do it anyways, it kinda doesnt effect me, either way

yes well said matthew, i agree with you totally..the ban is to try and get child cruelty under control,but yet again normal people are being discriminated against,parents who are diung all that they can to control their children,wether it be smacking or sending them to their rooms,banning sweets,or tv....my children were smacked when really naughty,not one of them became violent in later life,not one of them told me i had ruined their lives through smacking them,sometimes i was the wicked witch because dad didnt smack,but dad was in work all day,so it was my job to keep them under control, not an easy job with four,but at the end of the day,all my children knew they were loved unconditionally.x
