I've only read Rose's first post at the moment. Don't know what's caused it but here's my two penneth for what it's worth on the subject.

Have to agree with what you've said Rose. Also when I first joined the Genesconnected boards, the site flowed far more quickly so people could have a lot to say and say all they wanted and still not stand out as their posts would be absorbed within all the other conversations.

I don't think people have less to say but less people are posting so maybe some individuals stand out more. Thank goodness I say. At least they are trying to stimulate threads and conversations.

Also if people's threads are popular, more people are going to respond to them so it may look like certain people are"hogging" the boards when this is not the case.

People are interested in different subjects so not all threads are going to be popular to everyone (as long as they are polite, not offensive and don't breach the board guidelines - what's the problem? ) If you're not interested in something then people can start their own threads.

As I said I don't know the background so apologies if I've put my foot in it.

Aye, the usage of certain words could be very effective in getting a nasty thread removed lol :-D

I remember the time of September 2006 when people all around me were getting banned, sometimes simply for mentioning the name of another member who had been banned. I posted a thread with the definition of a certain four letter word and then reported it before anyone else could. They sent me a pm thanking me for reporting the thread pmsl :-D :-D I think I used one of my many lives on that one ;-)

Lol Cat, ah those were the days when I gave in to the naughty word and then reported myself so that the thread went too ;)

If I remember rightly there were a group of us one night who did just that to ensure a very nasty thread was deleted when the OP refused to remove it :-D

Ah come on now Rose, you know some are not happy unless they have something to moan about/criticise ;-) :-P

Things have been quiet lately, or have been when I've popped in, not been around much lately. Missed what happened last night, not seen any other bun fights for a while, they may have happened or they may not have. I certainly haven't felt the need to ahem......express myself and then report myself, before someone else did, for a long while now ;-)

I agree with Rose and everyone should be encouraged to have their say about whatever interests them. The boards are only as good as the posters make them.

I love debates but not personal attacks on a poster. Attack the argument by all means but not the person. I think personal attacks detract from the argument and reflect badly on the poster.

I would hate an ignore or block button because you wouldn't see the whole argument and so would increase things being taken out of context. For arguments sake Muffy had ignored me and so could no longer see my posts and Rose remarked on one of my post, the thread would be nonsensical to Muffy and could seem offensive depending on what Rose had written. It's bad enough on facebook with everyone not seeing the same page even when you are not blocked which result in misunderstandings.

As you say in your title Rose 'It’s easy to criticise'.

When I read that it reminded me of the Cherokee prayer:

'Oh Great Spirit grant that I may never find fault with my neighbour until I have walked the trail of life in his mocassins.'

Carol, I have never seen you write anything that could be seen as even mildy offensive or contentious even, and like Uggers has said re Ann it is not because you are 'wishy washy' , neither of you are :-)

Also like Ann , I have moved around a lot in life and though I still have friends in some of those places, I don't have a female friend close enough to go out and about with or pop round for coffee lol so I do pop in here as the equivalent, and enjoy a chat to all 'sorts' of people :-) especially if they have a quirky sense of humour lol.

Carol, Just continue to pop in and out as I for one like to see you. I hope you will get stronger but you are always a valued member of the boards.

And Uggers.... thank you!

I too like to see Susan Wiv on here and I too miss Daff's input a lot.

Hello Dolly again

Nice to be missed, Rose

Muffy - we must have all been holy terrors when we were at our worst eh ;)

Ann, I wouldn't desrcibe you as wishy washy or a non personality. I know you're not confrontational but you're straight up and you'll say what you think needs saying. I also think the boards are probably better organised now but I think there are a few other reasons a lot of people don't post - not going to elaborate cos I can't be doing with the fall out :-D

There are still some cracking people about - nice to see Susanwithnumbers is still here:) - but it's the content that doesn't interest me and I never feel I have much to add.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 4 Jun 2011 16:40

re Ugger's post:
*thinks* Am I a non personality, wishy washy, critical? Hmm! All three I guess!

But I still find that I like being on here, I am not on here as much as I was, and do spend a lot of my time on certain threads. But I am one of those sad people with no real friends here where I live - moved around too much and harder to make friends when you move when you are older,- so I do treat the people I talk to as friends. And I have got a lot out of groups like the Writers group, greaders, card makers and scrapbookers, bird watchers and photographers, besides what the site is meant for genealogical help.

As to general chat, I try to live and let live and am much happier with the board set up as it is now where people who enjoy the A-zs etc have their own board. I even visit them sometimes and participate. Yes there are people who appear to be critical, who appear to dominate but that, as Rose says, is because other people don't add threads of their own and I have come to realise that it is just their way. There are cultural differences to take into account as well. we need to make allowances for how people in other countries think and speak and if we are critical of them maybe it is us who are not being understanding. (I know there is a long word for that Rose but it eludes me at the moment!) :-) :-)

Dolly Report 4 Jun 2011 16:21

Hi Rose and everyone, I remember a few people from back then, Uggers I remember you and Elaine Gooner, Joy and many more names.
I joined around the time that Gaynor passed away or just before, I remember the lovely pink bear being sent around the UK in memory of Gaynor.

I don't think I got into any arguments in my previous time here with anyone, I just found the boards depressing at that time.
