Just looked at that, it does look like the same one.

We only run Firefox on our PC's the other 3 in the house are Mac's so it's not just an internet explorer problem.

I turned the computer on this morning and it went berserk with flashing messages etc. All I did yesterday was log onto the GR and browsed the boards and didn't open any adverts at all.

Though an add kept flashing up telling me I had won a new Mac and to click on accept which I didn't I only closed the page.

I have been sent a fix by other GR member so when i find a spare USB I'll give that fix a try.

This virus seems to attack a small chip on the mother board and stop stuff being sent out properly

MH..yes I know that but at the same time you would have thought that GR would make sure they have good protection for their paying customers

I too think its this site I had the problem on Saturday and it was a nightmere to get rid of. I have since purchased Norton package and this has helped and at least it picks up on these security risks unlike Virgin Securiy which I had installed. I had to do a full acan today as whilst on this site the same thing was about to happen but Norton picked up on it and i was able to stop any security risk. I think it pays to invest in a more secure scanning system. Plese be carful out there and do not give any personel info out to anyhing. Oh and the virus is Malware which as I have said is a bugger to get shot of.

Sorry to say, Deanna, but my problems happened even though I have BULLGUARD in place. However the warning about GR being unsafe came on 27th Feb and I used GR all afternoon on 28th with no problems - so far.
I wonder if anyone at Genes could give us any help?

I am sure that we can't blame Genes. If you look at the BBC technology news you will see that people who were obviously not on Genes were hit as well. My OH needs to get his lap top looked at as it has gone wrong - nothing to do with this malware - but when he phoned our IT person he said he'd have to get back to us as he was so busy with this virus hitting all sorts of PCs. And they can't have all been on genes. What the BBC site said was it appeared that these people were very clever, they imbedded the virus/malware into all sorts of adverts, spreading them around so that when people are hit they blame the web site and not the originators of the virus.

Booby-trapped adverts that hit visitors with fake security software have been discovered on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) website.

Analysis of the LSE site suggests that over the last 90 days, about 363 pages had hosted malware.

The LSE said its site was now safe and an investigation showed that ads provided by a third party were the culprit.

One victim claimed his PC was made unusable after being infected.

Security expert ***** fell victim when he viewed the site on 27 February.

He visited the LSE homepage to find out why some people reported that they could not access it.

The site was blocked by Firefox, he said, but accessible via Google's Chrome browser.

"It seemed to work with Chrome but then a few seconds later, without having to click on anything, pop-ups started to appear," he said.

The malicious code closed down several of the programs Mr***** was using and stopped new ones being started.

"I visited the site and it compromised my machine," said Mr ******

While he was fighting to regain control of his machine, the malware kicked off fake virus alerts in pop-up windows. One window was a fake security scanner which claimed it had detected lots of different malware on the PC.

Mr ******** said his machine fell victim despite being updated with the latest batch of virus definitions earlier in the day.

Analysis of the LSE homepage by Google's safe browsing scheme, which scans web pages for malicious code, found the site had been listed for "suspicious activity 6 time(s) over the past 90 days".

malware strictly speaking is NOT a virus.........
a virus replicates itself whereas malware make you think that you have a virus....
the other week I was hit with the security scan scam.....which stopped every app that I tried to start,

...I went to malwarebytes site and downloaded their program to combat this nuisance.....followed the instructions and its all clear now!!

I accessed the site via my other Pc and saved the prog to a usb memory stick . started my laptop in safe mode, with internet connections and followed the instructions.....

but cant you start in safe mode?with internet options? or is that kaput also?

what I think I am trying to say is.........
that whenever a threat like this occurs,it seems that we all run around like headless chickens, asking what can I do about such n such a threat....
while your Pc is ok why not got to these type of sites and download their offerings for free, then when the time comes you MIGHT already have an answer...safe on a cd, or memory stick, or whatever....

I have Malware on my computer and I didnt buy it. Try the Computer Active web site to get freeware that has been tried and tested.Sorry, its Malaware and is a proper programme, not a virus. I think it is by Malbytes.

thats why my laptop keeps on crashing,and my daughters computer has had two trojans in as many wks(ive been using her computer for my research on genes).x

By the way. There is a warning about this in our local paper today. The advice given is, if you get the warning up do not click on the red cross to close it but shut your computer down immediately thatw ay it is possible the malware won't have time to load onto your pc.

OK Bob, I have loaded it onto my pc now and run the scan mo malware. I actually haven't had any problems. Other half's problems with his laptop apparently is that some of the drivers are corrupted and the IT man has not got a clue why. Nothing to do with viruses. He is going to wipe it and reload Vista.

Unfortunately the drivers were important ones like the keyboard. But IT man proved the keyboard was fine by attaching to another pc (or something). Sounds like it is going to cost £60 to fix.

I keep getting Trojan warning on Freinds Reunited. Same on Hotmail so I've switched to Gmail
