I haven't had any problems so far but like IGP have Firefox and ad block on my pc so don't get adverts. I did run AVG full scan and advanced system care plus a programme called super anti spyware this morning. The latter just picked up a couple of tracking cookies but nothing sinister. Just remember to do as Jude says, if you have nor requested it don't click on it. I am also on co.nz on here and don't get the adverts.

A couple of months back my OH did have something similar that wanted to sell him anti something or other. it was an American site and he managed to zap it himself, not without a lot of hassle. He didn't get it from either Ebay or genes though but another site he went on to.

You can have as many installed as you wish, but it is not advisable to run more than one at the same time.

Many AV programs start up automatically when you boot up and run in the background, waiting to grab any nasties that may appear as you are browsing - they are known as 'Resident'. So if you have several installed, you must make sure that you only have one of them enabled to run at start-up.

If you do have more than one running, It won't trash your PC as has been suggested by some, but can cause unexpected problems.

Similarly when running a scan, which should should do, say, once a week, only one AV program should be scanning at any one time.

I use the Free AVG and so far, touch-wood I've been protected.

A few years ago we had the virus protection from our ISP and got smacked when they had problems and I think the protection failed for just long enough to get us. I don't understand about needing two working at the same time though. Presumably whilst you are downloading a new virus protection there is something in place that monitors everything when you are in the download process.

I had the same happen to me yesterday whilst I was on this site. The screen was bombarded with messages, after doing a scan itself , and freezing everything, told me I had 25 thingies which needed sorting and I should down load something immediately. As I can go into panic mode quite quickly I came out of it and did a system restore....not to mention a few computer prayers. Whilst I have a N*rton thingy which is out of date I cant get my head round what to do if I want to download a free anti virus such as AVG because I know that you are not supposed to have two anti virus working at the same time. Unfortunately it is all above my head and no matter how many time I read C*mp*ter Ac*ive it all appears that they are preaching to the converted...My prayers seem to have worked so far as I have managed to get back onto this site.....but for how long?????- jle

I log on to GR most days and haven't come across any problems on this nor any other websites.

I use Firefox for browsing and adblock-plus to prevent advertisements loading. However if it is an advert causing the problem, hopefully they are simply not getting through. I recall that GR did have a problem (as did lots of other sites) with what were supposed to 'safe' adverts planting tracking cookies. They were eventually removed and proved to be more of an annoyance than a danger.

For Security, Avir antivirus and SUPERAntiSpyware run in the background but haven't reported any problems either. I also have Windows Security Essentials installed.

I had an issue this morning on GR with our spare computer. Now it's kaput and won't load up any programs.

Wants me to buy Malware antivirus over the internet using my credit card. Well no chance of that so I'm off tomorrow to buy some software and try to load it on.

As the spare computer is only used by me for my family tree and it was working fine until I logged onto Gr and started looking at the boards.

My daughter reckons it's something to do with adverts. Apparently lots of forums that rely on adverts for revenue are haveing the same problems as well as Ebay and here.

I belong to a local forum that has ads and there have been a couple of flashing banners popping up saying I have won a prize etc. Logged off and ran a scan and nothing has happened since. Have had no problems on here but I use the ZA site and it doesn't have ads.

I keep getting it, too - I'm using Google Chrome so don't know if that's anything to do with it - but it only does it with the .co.uk site, not the .com site. (Thing is, I'm on a Mac, not a PC.)

My laptop has just given me a horrible warning about GenesReunited being an Unsafe site which can infect your computer with viruses and all sorts of infections.
Does anyone know anything about this?
