Hi Mick etc

I have a friend who lives about an hour away from Townsville, many of her family live in Townsville. This is what I received from her last night (Sunday):-

Well today we have power back thanks to a very large generator ...
we have been told it may be a week or more before we are back on the grid.
Electricity has been out since 1am Thursday morning ...
that was the height of the cyclone ...
Atm we have no landline phone ...
and are having trouble with our mobile phones ...
it is to do with the power to the towers.
Water is being trucked in to us ...
but as we are all alive I guess I shouldn't be whining ...
We lost a few trees ...
but didn't get any damage to our home ...
All my family is safe ...
my sister and her family still don't have power ...
neither do my brothers or dad ...
they hope their part of Townsville will be back on line some time today ...
Thanks for the message ...
Not sure when I shall be able to get back on line again ...
I guess once all our power has been restored

Makes it all so much more real doesn't it??

Hi Mick, Allan and everyone,
My Cousin is in Edmonton and told my Aunt there were difficulties getting supplies to the shops there.
Otherwise he is cheerful as ever and his wifes only worry was she couldnt get any ham for his sandwiches!!!!

It does make you think, are we causing this extreme weater the world is experiencing by our behaviour with regard to fossil foods and deforeststion. It is strange that all areas are experiencing unusual conditions.

Diane,
My daughter lives in Manchester and has been over in Melbourne since 8th Jan to look after her brother's children during the school holidays as my d.i.l.died last June.
This trip was a break for her to visit Sydney whilst there.apparently on the Sat when she arrived in Sydney,it was the hottest day on record and a bit too hot to go visiting the sights, but they did and were running through fountains to keep cool.I believe it did break yesterday and they had storms. So while in Oz she has witnessed the extremes in weather that you are experiencing at the moment.
She leaves on 22nd Feb.Hope we don't get a return of winter here when she comes home.
I'm not on Friends re-united but on FB,mainly to see pictures that the families put on.

With what has happend in Australia it makes us Brits weather moaning shrink into nothing. We have a little bit of this and a little bit of that, so my heart goes out to you all in the effected areas. keep you chin up.

Allan. Very sad to hear about the fires over in the West, mate ( Perth )

Dont know how much more devistation this Country can endure?

The Agricultral side of things is really taking a beating all over the country, and to be working on the land you would need to be made of strong stuff, and have nerves of steel these days.

Mick, my son did manage to get back here to Melbourne and was able to get back to work,so it all ended up ok.As you say,it is so ironic that we have these terrible bushfires in Perth,35 houses gone, etc,on the 2nd anniversary of Black Saturday, and more water than we know how to deal with in Victoria and Qld.How can we harness all this water more effectively? I wish I knew. There must be a way!

Mick from the Bush

Mick from the Bush Report 6 Feb 2011 21:47

Yes Allan - it is also so ironic that we have floods here on the 2nd anniversary of Black Saturday! Crazy country to live in!

Mick, what a country of contrasts.

Bush fires in the perth area yesterday destroyed at least 40 properties. The fires are still uncontrolled at the moment and strong easterlies forecast for this morning which will not help.

Winds so strong yesterday that fixed wing water bombers coule not be used. FESA hade to rely on Helitacs.

Reinforcements are being rushed in from Bunbury and Geraldton.

Fortumately no human casualties so far

Mick
Good to hear your High & Dry with a cold one in the fridge.
We have had 40+ for a week here, lovely southerly buster today,
I will not complain though as better than having my feet wet and house waterlogged.
I feel for all those going through our weather conditions here in Oz at the moment.
Fires in the west, Cyclones and floods in the east.
OH I do love our country and wouldn't be anywhere else.

Stay Safe.

As Tony said, you have to have a great sense of humour to live here or you would drive yourself crazy.

I would think he would be able to get over the hills via Poowong and Drouin Margot? Or up through Loch and Korumburra to Warragul.
