Dizzi that is something entirely different, and as you know I always understand what you write :)

My noticing spelling or grammar is not directed at anyone who has dyslexia, or illness or lack of opportunity to learn when they were young , which I hope everyone realises.

I do think if one 'can' write so that the majority of people can understand ( and these boards are chat rooms for people from all countries and districts), then one should.

I hope no one would ever be put off posting because they 'can't do spelling' .

Kriss, there may be many reasons why people are "afraid" to participate on threads...but I suspect fear of having their spelling or grammar commented on is way down the list behind other circumstances that have put them off posting?

I wouldn't ever suggest that someone with a limited vocabulary for instance had less of importance to say than someone who 'dressed it up' with big words. Sometimes one very ordinary word says just as much as a page full of them lol.

One which annoys me, mainly said by teenagers .
To me it sounds like

'I can't be asked' ......(to be bothered to do something)
But the offspring insist that it is actually
'I can't be a*sed'

Which doesn't make sense!

Unfortuantely, our region loves its Off Of's!

lol Kriss, other than 2 years at college, I haven't mixed in 'academic' circles either, and even there, as it was a WEA college nearly all of the students and tutors had backgrounds which were 'non-academic' ( welsh mining families and the like).

Re the newspaper site, i look at a couple of those, and agree the comments often get very personal and have little to do with a serious discussion of the topic. Rascism and bigotry are rife, which is worrying in itself.

I'd certainly rather read comments from someone tolerant and broadminded but written in poor grammar and spelling, than a perfectly crafted piece of writing expressing abhorrent views :)

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 12 Jan 2011 21:35

Kriss

I have mixed in academic circles all my life

...... 5 years at uni, being a teacher (of biology!), marrying an academic and working at a university as a technician while OH was a faculty member can do that!

I also wrote scientific articles and was a copy and author's editor for others, all part of my job.

HOWEVER ............ I would never ever correct anyone's written or spoken English on any kind of forum

I would do it when marking essays as a teacher

I have done it to my daughter when checking homework or trying to teach her something

I have done it or suggested it when editing someone's writing for publication

Those are all very different situations from taking part in a forum

I would also be doing it privately, not in public

To me ........ people who correct others in a forum are just showing ignorance!

I'm Lancashire born and bred, even though we left the UK in 1967 ............. and I can lapse into dialect with the best of anyone (athough I do now have to think carefully how to spell dialect!)

Like Rose, I would rather read tolerant, broadminded comments written with poor spelling and grammar than a perfect one with evil views.

I do take care with what I write ..... but I certainly don't dismiss or ignore writings by others who don't or can't write as I do.

I do dismiss and ignore those with extreme views

No I'm not squeamish Kriss, have to say though anything concerning cruelty animals is guaranteed to send my blood pressure up ... I like animals...sometimes much better than people lol.

Rambling

Rambling Report 12 Jan 2011 22:26

Kriss, already found the article where I expected it to be, and sadly not surprised anymore by the depths to which people will sink, or at some of the comments.

edit to add: if a person is kind to animals and people then that is of much more importance to me than whether they can spell correctly, read, write etc.

I sometimes find that those with nothing to say, spend a long time telling me so.

Recent reports indicate that reading is not apparently a national accomplishment in schools anymore.

I would suggest that while all the foregoing may aggravate we rarely, if ever, correct somebody (unless maybe family) for using the expressions. I would far rather people wrote/posted than didn't. And the mixture of dialect, personal ways of writing (even text) make these boards the friendly colourful places they are.
