I still think it better if the room got flooded rather than "hang" around waiting for the ice to melt.

Was he in this room in snowy wintery cold Northern Russia. If so he would have a long wait for a thaw.

I think the room was built around him Bob. First get your block of ice then get your stooge and house him in on all four sides with nothing but a light and a short piece of rope. Maybe he was hanging upside down. Great way to spend Christmas.

He'd been standing on a block of ice...it melted and......not sure how ice got into enclosed space though ;o

The room was flooded with water he tied himself to the 9" rope and then when the room drained he was left hanging 20 feet.

If there was nothing else in the room , how did he attach the rope to the ceiling, to the light?

He wouldn't have been allowed a rope in a British cell !!

"Enclosed" means no doors and no windows.

And, apart from the man and the rope, the room was completely empty - so, sorry, no step ladder!

the cell wasn't similar to the aforementioned lift cage and the cage was hoisted up also?

The person is a dwarf and cannot reach the elevator button for the penthouse except when it rains because on those days he can reach the button with his umbrella.

Liz's right, it was a pact.

This plane came down somewhere seriously inhospitable. There was no food. The survivors made a pact. They would eat each other .... piece by piece.

One of the crew was a surgeon, so he had to be left intact, so to speak. The deal being, that if they were ever rescued, he would even the score and prove so to the other passengers.

Left arms first. Munch, munch....

Anyway, here's another one:

A man lives in the penthouse of an apartment building. Every morning he takes the elevator down to the lobby and leaves the building. Upon his return, however, he can only travel halfway up in the lift and has to walk the rest of the way - unless it's raining. What is the explanation for this?
