You've got a brand new .....................................
Anybody remember Melanie? ;)
I've got a brand new pair of roller skates You've got a brand new key I think that we should get together and Try them on to see
Anyhow, it's actually a reconditioned Samsung monitor, probably from the guvmint. Spifferino all the same. The "buttons" for adjusting things are sensor thingies. Yeah, just call me a luddite, but yeesh, the other one wasn't *that* old.
Came into the office this morning, jiggled my mouse, and only one monitor lit up. I work with two, and it would be danged hard to go back to working with one again, and would mean printing out all kinds of stuff likely; since getting the second monitor I've probably saved a dozen trees singlehandedly. Work on left monitor, sources and research on right monitor. (And for TTF, there's nothing like having FreeBMD and Ancestry and everything on one monitor, and the thread on the other.) The paperless office finally arrived. ... Which leaves me wondering why my office is still covered in piles of paper ...
So No.1 came over and took the cover off and discovered, just luckily, that one of the fans inside the computer was dead. Fortunately not the important one. He fiddled with the video card and the plugs, took out an apparently dead dial-up modem for good measure, took out the video card, but no go. Monitor one wouldn't work no matter what, so he gave up, left me with one monitor, and went out in the pouring rain to get me a new one and a new fan, came back, screwed the fan in, plugged the monitor in, and bob's my uncle. And it's all bright and shiny and just lovely. Probably because it has yet to acquire its protective coating of tar and nicotine.
But back to Melanie.

And never mind the little twerp saying he "remembers it so fondly as a boy of 5 or 6" ... or the one saying was her mum's favourite song. Pfft! Sixties wannabes. ;)

And I knew, I absolutely knew, who would reply to this one. ;)
Yes I did. Who would be a fan of Melanie but RR? I had a bet with myself. I win!
I knew your sign too, if you recall. ;)

Sheesh Janey
I've come over all nostalgic and singing to myself.
Our desk top is cobbled together with OH's original pc and eldest sons pc's when he left home for new horizons and couldn't be ar*** (bothered) to take them with him .... monitor, fan and tower thingy plus at least 2 key boards. Still a few bits and bobs not touched. Not much left of OH's original so I hope son 1 never asks for anything back. lol.
Using Son 2's laptop at the moment because he is back living with us temporalily (Sp?).
Still singing to myself.

La lala la la
But can you all start off on the screechy high note Melanie does? ;)
This new fan is very noisy and I have to turn the volume up.
That youtube is from 1971. The first one I hit when I googled it was this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMRJ1oFNjKE
2008, and she's not doing that high note anymore. ;)
Libby -- maybe he'll forget to take the laptop this time!

janey, i remember that song by melanie but i think the Wurzels sung it as well? not that i was a fan of the Wurzels lol
i must say now i know how you can be a whizz on ttf. with 2 monitors, it would really speed me up and has given me food for thought although dont think the xmas budget this year will stretch that far. but maybe after sales time in new year!
stupid me after i keep humming that song i just realised it was a combineharvester the wurzels sung about not roller skates. gosh its still early yet and i think the brain is going already. birthday is soon approaching beg of dec and then im going backwards. next year im going to dissappear until after said event i think. i just want to be aforty something foreverlol.

Wurzels and combine harvesters. Hmm. I've heard of combine harvesters! Now I have to go youtube Wurzels.
Meanwhile, happy girl songs from girls who used to hit the screechy high notes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTQubWecuv8
Big Yellow Taxi, and Joni Mitchell in 1970!
And a later Joni doing it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlNZN94_u-s&feature=related
which is actually kinda nicer. But then anything she does is nice, not to say perfect.
Take comfort: Joni and Melanie are older than us. Of course, they still sing better than us, too.

Not that it wasn't easy to mock Melanie. ;)
And now you know that's what they were doing! What are you, too young to remember Melanie or something?

Sticking with the happy girl songs and conveyances:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-GFqhCq2HA
Janis asks: Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ? My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends. Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends, So Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV ? Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me. I wait for delivery each day until three, So oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV ?
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town ? 'm counting on you, Lord, please don't let me down. Prove that you love me and buy the next round, Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town ?
Everybody! Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ? My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends, Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends, So oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
May as well add Melanie, in case anybody else needs something stuck in their head. ;)
I rode my bicycle past your window last night I rollerskated to your door at daylight It almost seems like you're avoiding me I'm OK alone but you've got something I need, well
Refrain: I've got a brand new pair of rollerskates You've got a brand new key I think that we should get together and Try them on to see I been lookin' around awhile You got something for me Oh, I got a brand new pair of rollerskates You got a brand new key
I ride my bike, I rollerskate, don't drive no car Don't go too fast, but I go pretty far For somebody who don't drive, I been all around the world Some people say I done all right for a girl
I asked your mother if you were at home She said yes, but you weren't alone Oh, sometimes I think that you're avoiding me I'm OK alone but you got something I need, well
I've got a brand new pair of roller skates ...

Different son Janey.
Unfortunately he will take the lappy with him so I am going to have to resort to fighting with daughter for the use of her lappy ( in the dining room where it is nice and warm) or with OH for use of the PC on the landing (where it is pluddy freezing).
Think I may have to make use of teenage hormones and cause an argument so daughter goes off to bed in a strop and I can use her lappy.
Still singing with Melanie and refuses to listen about combined harvesters and the Wurzells although they are now trying to but in.

Ah, *that* Janis.
Problem is (as with much of her stuff), that doesn't qualify as a happy girl song. ;(
And it isn't about a means of transportation!
Yer bringin us down, RR.
That turn of phrase always makes me think of a radio interview Peter Gzowski, legendary figure of Cdn radio, did with Leonard. I have no idea what Peter said, but Leonard replied: "Now you're bringing me down." Peter was amazed: he had brought Leonard Cohen down! ;)

janey i just had to check out those blooming wurzels on u-tube and now realised how awful it was. i think melanie was far superior any day and yellow taxi was good too.
in the early 70s we had a magazine called disco 45. it printed the words to the current chart hits every week. did you ever have something similar?

Rose sounds like she's going somewhere maybe?
Maybe ... she's leaving on a jet plane.

Okay, John Denver wrote it, but he isn't a girl.
Four strong winds that blow lonely, seven seas that run high ...

I didn't pay attention to the charts, Flo67. ;)
Around 1970, I lived in a big mansion with 16 or so other hippy students, and several of the boys would spend their student loans on stereos and records, so I didn't have to go looking for my music! We even had Rocky Racoon living in the basement.
