Mel, I wonder if you have actually lost faith in a particular religious organization, and their interpretation of God. Which is something different entirely. |

sorry Eldrick I didn't mean 'you' in the personal sense...i should have put 'one would (might) have made ones own object of faith...' if one had not been "subjected to religion" |

I did say that my upbringing played a part in my faith and that's where the religion comes into it. I don't advocate blind faith. I have experienced, analysed and made my own mind up. |

Maybe a thousand years ago I would have, Rose, but the benefits of 21st century science would stop me worshipping the sun or whatever. |

Course you would Eldrick lol you would have made your own object of faith...be it the sun or nature or a supreme being of your own to account for the miracles all around us... |

Granted a few maybe both but those with faith do no neccessarily need to have faith in a god they could have faith in their team winning or their house not falling in and some fundamentalists may be v devout and religeous but not really have faith in a god they may prefer to look to other men for guidence x |

But if you'd never ben subjected to religion, you wouldn't have found a faith, if you see what I mean. |

I have faith but I don't go to church and I don't have much time for organised religion. My faith has come together through my upbringing but has been developed over the years by experience, reading and finally deciding what I believe in without influence from others. I'm comfortable with where I am. |

I dont see how they are different issues, to be honest. To have faith in some nebulous deity then it requires a belief in religious teachings or doctrine, surely. Or else how would one know what to have faith in? |

I would agree there Eldrick (eek not good to be in agreeance all of the time) it was all down to religeon that Afghanistan started ~ but there is religeon and there is faith two totally different issues a person of faith may not be particularly religeous same as do religeous people all have faith ~ not always x |

I rather disagree with that. Most recent wars - Afghanistan in particular, have their roots in crazy religious fundamentalism - on both sides. The lunatics who flew into the twin towers didn't do it because of class or culture, their last words were 'god is great' or whatever mumbo jumbo translates into that phrase. The London bombers didn't do it because of a cluture conflict - they did it because their religion told them to do it, or rather some warped self seeking version of that religion. |

As most wars are in reality based on conflicts of class and/or culture I'm not sure that that would do a lot of good. |

Yes, I don't doubt it's importance as a literary document and I agree, some of the language rather freely translated from the original Hebrew is rather picturesque, but a new translation would inevitably mean the true meaning of the Hebrew word 'almah', mistranscribed as 'virgin' instead of 'young woman' would throw everything into utter confusion and cause wars, which would be a great shame and very expensive. |

Eldrick thank you for adding your opinion ~ as someone who has recently discovered she has lost faith in God I maybe inclined to agree with you but then again no its a fine piece of literature whether fact or fiction (and I still believe the latter its my faith in God needs restoring not my faith in the bible) and every good piece of literature deserved its place the bible particularly the AV is most worthy x |
