It could be Mel, but if you did away with the authorised version altogether you would alienate the older members of the church. Maybe there needs to be a mix using one version for some services and the other for others.

thats what I think Ann my hubby arguing it out as we spk but he differs from me in that its AV all the way I agree we need both I was bought up on both and find they compliment one another x

I think there is , and I wouldn't ( and don't lol) like to see the language 'dumbed down' , (much of it is very beautiful )...any more than I think Shakespeare should be re-written.

Fine to add a modern interpretation as 'notes' I think, as with works of Shakespeare, to enable 'modern' readers to understand those words and phrases which are no longer used.

The only thing I would say in favour of the AV is that the language is beautiful in itself, even if we often don't know what it says. For example the Psalms wouldn't sound the same translated into modern 'speak' for me.

Ann I find the poetical language of the AV very beautiful which is one of the reasons I have encouraged my children to get to know that as much as their NIV x

God's word is God's word it doesn't need a re-write "oh ye of little understanding" x

So many versions to choose from nowadays. The New English version is popular with clergy who tend to look at the accuracy of the translations. I quite like the Good News set up.

Don't forget there is also The Gospels in Scouse.....lol

Do let's not forget that the "authorized version" is no more than a translation of some very old texts in several different languages!

Not only more readable, but very probably more accurate in some places.

for a church thats fashioned on Puritanistic values I'm surprised they want to let the AV go x

I must say personally i cannot bring myself to replace, as i was taught it, "trespasses and trespass" with 'sins' or 'debts' etc

Rose I agree entirely my faith is based around what I was taught by my Nan I was brought up on both but when the bible was read aloud it was always the AV I understood it well enough as a child and so did my children x

There are some very interesting sites online, which I found some time back, where the 'original' texts, ie Greek and Hebrew are translated, sheds a whole different light on some phrases...

but if you don't understand the meaning 'behind' the words i guess it won't matter how modern or archaic they are?
