Shurrup Daff,

Yes TW, had considered that but I know from researching planning applications that streets were redeveloped in whole or part, you would have thought I'd find a couple of houses. My grandma's house has gone but fortunately there is a row of 8 houses left in the street adjacent to her house so I can get an idea of where she lived and what the conditions were like. They were quite 'posh' 3 floor jobbies plus basements and her family lived on the first floor.

A few publishers do " (name of town) in old photographs" books, and sometimes you can find the right places in there.

I found a photograph of the long-demolished row of houses in Ebbw Vale where my gt grandparents lived.

I had to go to Lichfield one day so decided to look to see if my great grandparents house was still there. It is - now a dentists surgery which was closed that day but a lady was in doing paperwork, and she let me in and showed me around the whole house!

Hi Gwynne,

Thanks for that, I am at a loss at the moment where to start...lol I might just go back to adding photos of the churches for christenings, marriages and burials for a while.
Doesn't give you an insight into their lives though :-((

Edit: How lovely Liz, I wish I wasn't so far away from where the main branches of the family ended up!

Pm me your address again I will put that book The Blackest Streets ( Sarah Wise) in the post tomorrow......I do believe the Author mentions the names of places that used to be in your area of interest.

As has already been suggested though.....There are some great photographic books of the whole of London, as well as other parts of the country.

Try London+Photo in the Amazon search box ( or the area you want to find photos of.

Edit: Whoops...I meant 'The Worst Street in London by Fiona Rule...am still reading the former.

OOh, Daff, my Mum was born in Ebbw, before they moved to Barry, and I used to visit my gt aunts and uncles there when I was little.

Some live in Mount Pleasant Square and others in Hall St, Victoria. Many of them went there from Llanelly, Brec.

Very small world indeed.
