I too have lived near Reading for most of my life. Goring is about 10 miles from Reading by what is now the most direct road:A329.

Bradfield is about 8 miles, direct route A4 then A340.

I wouldn't call either of them towns, but villages. Quite rural now, even more rural in 1885. But certainly across the fields, country lanes would have been quicker. Although the A4 was the main Coach route from London to Bath. Google maps (directions) is very useful on distances.

Hi

I,ve lived in this area all my life and these towns and villages are within walking distance of each other IF you know the back roads .......

Now in the 1885 there where no roads like we have now so across fields would have been shorter!!

the distance from Oxford to London could be cut to prehaps 50 miles....

Oxford is on the Main A40 road 58 miles from London, and even in the early days when the A40 was the main stage coach route to the west country it would only take two days to travel between these two places, and only a short hop to Reading further on,Minnie must have enjoyed travelling.
One of my relations was born in Kent, and was christened in High Wycombe three weeks later ,some of these families certainly got around ,Fred.

I have just had another look in my atlas-Goring is between Reading and Wallington,a little closer to Reading. That's the larger town of the two.

Other towns around it are Woodcote,Lower Basildon,Upper Basildon,Pangbourne,Tidmarsh,Streatley, etc.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Margo, Wallingford and Woodcote have come up a fair bit also, so I am pretty sure this is the Minnie Hayden I am looking for.

Terry

I'm in Oz too.

It's near Wallingford and Woodcote in my atlas. Oxford is a fair way away-
about 100 miles or so.

Kensington is in Greater London, nowhere near there, according to the atlas.

Margot.

Thanks again, our posts must have crossed. Bradfield has come up a few times, so that looks more positive.

Thanks Carol, I think I will have to do some more digging, these two towns haven't come up anywhere else in the family tree, although I suppose Minnie's mother could have been travelling at the time of her birth.

Hi there, I am in Australia. I am currently looking for birth record for a Minnie Hayden born in Goring Oxfordshire in 1885. I can only find listings for Kensington, under Hayden and Warwick under Haydon in 18895. Can anyone tell me if these towns are near Goring.
Thanks Terry
