Norwich rug presented to city
SARAH BREALEY

Last updated: 16/04/2010

The Norwich rug.
A special rug celebrating all the places called Norwich around the world was presented to the city today.

The rug was presented on behalf of Benjamin Lathrop, mayor of Norwich, Connecticut, who designed and made the rug as a memento of the 350th anniversary of his own city last July.

The rug was presented to lord mayor Evelyn Collishaw by Margaret Ince, from the Norfolk and Norwich World Family, an association which fosters links with other places called Norwich and Norfolk.

City officials are now looking for a suitable place to display the large rug, which bears the coats-of-arms of Norwich and Norfolk as well as of Norwich in Connecticut.

Norwich, Connecticut was founded in 1659 and was the birthplace of Benedict Arnold, one of the most infamous figures of the American Revolution. There are also places called Norwich in Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, New York state, North Dakota, Pennsylvania and Vermont, as well as two in Michigan and three in Ohio. There is another Norwich in Ontario, Canada, and two in Jamaica.

_________

A few years ago a chap started linking up with all the other places called Norwich and Norfolk over the world. Since then there have been conventions and get togethers and people have visited each other's Norwich. My son and I joined in one year when a lot of the visitors attended the Lord Mayor's show and we have tshirts that were printed for the occasion.
It's a nice idea don't you think, to make contact with other places all with the same name
