I know that the Irish Census records started as early as 1821. I know that a lot of them were destroyed but there are some fragments of the earlier ones that survived. Does anyone know if they are online and where?

Try irishorigins.com

This site covers Irish property records known as Griffiths Valuations and covers households between the great famine and start of civil registration (1848-64)

Returns for 1901 and 1911 can be viewed at the Public Records Office of Notrhern Ireland and National Archives of Dublin.

Thanks Cooper....I'm looking for the 1821 & 1831 dates because my ancestor was in Scotland by 1841. However, I suppose his parents may have been still in Ireland after 1841.

Many thanks.

Rose, great site but couldn't find anything so far.

Going to check the other sites.

Susan....I couldn't see anything obvious on IGI, however, I'm not sure whether they'd be on there being catholic, not really knowledgeable about catholic or Irish records.

Thanks Dermot...will check those too.

Old Age Pension Claims...
The old age pension was introduced on 1 January 1909 for those over seventy years of age.
It is worth checking the old age pension search forms, as they contain extracts from the 1841 and 1851 censuses, the originals of which were almost completely destroyed.

The old age pension was introduced on 1 January 1909 for those over seventy years of age. For many born before 1864, when the state registration of births began in Ireland, it was necessary to pay for a search to be made of the 1841 and 1851 censuses in order to prove their entitlement to the pension.

The forms submitted by the claimants include such information as the names of parents, location at the time of the 1841 or 1851 census, and age at the time of the claim and during the relevant census year.
