I'm trying to find out what happened to my great grandmother. She was called Martha Annie Goddard b 1873/4 nee Smart. On the 1911 census she was listed as being in an "institution" in Blaby leicester. Anyone any idea what this institution may have been? There was a workhouse at Blaby ..... Her husband William and Son Walter Richard were living in Billesdon at that time.

Many thanks
Ann

it says she is a patient not an inmate. Workhouses had their own hospitals that were open to the public who couldn't afford private doctor treatment . I would say she was in hospital
EDIT: going backwards on each census sheet because the patients are listed alphabetically is does say the staff are employed at the county council Lunatic Asylum

name and address is Leicestershire and Rutland Lunatic Asylum ,Narborough ,near Leicester

David,

The 1911 census should tell you what it was if you pay to see the image/transcription.

You may be able to track down her medical records, if they still exist.
