After waatching a clip of an old Carry On film recently we started talking about some of the stars who are no longer with us including Charles Hawtrey. Wilkipedia states he was born George Frederick Joffre Hartree in 1914 . . . . I can see no one of this name (even without the christian names) being born in 1914 or any other year for that matter!

I wonder why.

Curiousity got the better of me but I couldn't find him either!

According to Wilkepedia he was born George Frederick Joffre Hartree on 30 November 1914 in Hounslow, Middlesex, England, and died 27 October 1988.

I know Wilkepedia is not 100% correct at times but to have specific district for his birth I "assumed" it was right . . . . how strange !

How odd. Could he have been born a girl. He wasn't ever so butch.

I seem to remember hearing way back, just after he died that his age was not really known?

There is a fair bit on google, but most of it suggests his early life was not known,. I think possibly the date and place of birth were 'made up to fit', perhaps he was illigitimate

there is a Frederick George Hawtree marriage in 1906 perhaps he 'borrowed' the name of a relative?

There a web-site of Wes Butters who has recently written a book on Charles Hawtrey, I e-mailed him asking when he was born but after a couple of replies he said, "If you really want to know speak to the
General Register Office; registration district Brentford, Sub-district
Isleworth in the County of Middlesex."

There are two deaths for him, one under Hartree aand one as Hawtrey.

I have to say I was only curious in the first place !

It seems so strange that someone has discovered an "actual" birthdate for this person yet to everyone else it's a mystery ! !

I'm so curious now I just might write to the Register Office; registration district Brentford, Sub-district Isleworth in the County of Middlesex asking for the birth certificate of George Frederick Joffre Hartree born in 1914 . . . . . but I can imagine them writing back saying, "No such person" !
