When is a Hot Match.....not a Hot Match?

I'm not talking about the usual one....

MargarettawasMargot Report 10 Apr 2010 12:48

I'm talking about the latest lot that I got,all saying that I had 1 new match.

When I click on "View" beside the name,I get this message:

"No hot matches.

Send a message to the tree owner to find out more.

You have no matches with the other member's tree."

I stopped counting after 25,I still have more. What is going on??

Has anyone else had the same thing happen,or is it just me?

EDIT: I can't delete them, either, because there's no "Discard this match" message written underneath it.

I have not looked lately Margot, I get fed up with the hot matches which give me a correct name and date..... and a birth place Thousands of miles away.
Plus they seem to come duplicated every few weeks.
I liked the old way of searching on here too.
Ah well, Just keep searching. ;-0)

Under the new system I have been caught occasionally when I find a possible, go to my tree to check details, or some other site to check place whereabouts or something, get back to Hot Matches and get this "no hot matches" as though I had deleted it by moving away

Hi Margot, I have taken the tick out of the Hot Matches box in my account. yes I am one of the horrible people who does not like the hot matches wasted hour of discarding.

When I click on the Hot Matches button on the dark green line, I now have the message.

You have no ignored Hot Matches.

Go into your My Account and take off the hot matches tick. See if that gets rid of everything. If not the email to GR starts, " Dear GR, I am having problems with the Hot Matches section of the site............

For the last few weeks, every time I try to look at a hot match, I get the same one -- the 10 matches (my highest count) with my distant cousin Patricia in the US.

That's what happens in Firefox. It works if I switch to IE, which I resent having to use for this site because of all the crud I have blocked with Firefox that assails me in IE.

Why this outfit can't just design and operate a functioning website is beyond me. A 12-yr-old could do better.

I'm so glad that you wrote that-now I know that it's not only me that that's happening to!55 matches-that one would be very frustrating! Mine was only happening with all the (1) matches.I've just checked and my list of Hot Matches is now back to normal, thank goodness.I have gone from 7 pages in total,4 pages of which were not Hot Matches, back to 3 pages of genuine ones. All those ridiculous ones have gone.If it happens again I will do as Aunty Sherlock suggests and email GR with the problem.

Aunty Sherlock
Thank you for your 2 posts, (the second one being a nudge.)
Usually I do like the Hot Matches, through them I have found quite a lot of valuable information, met up with cousins here and in the UK, but this lot had me nearly tearing my hair out! I agree with Janey-why can't GR get it right, how hard can it be?? If it happens again,I will definitely adopt your suggestion, and send them an email asking them what is going on.

Deanna-
I don't mind that sort of annoying Hot Match so much-at least there's something to click on,and you can delete it straight away when you see there's no match.
However, when it says you have (1) HM,and you click on view, and it says there is no HM,that makes me mad, especially when there's over 25 of the bl***y things, and there's nowhere to delete them! I spent easily over one hour going through trying to delete them, and all the other non HM's.

Elizabeth
Perhaps that's what I did, also, but it still should not cause that to happen!

Heather
You're lucky!

I have received emails from GR saying that I have a Hot Match with another member concerning a name of an ancestor - then I find that I have "No Hot Matches". However, when the email says that I have Hot Matches (but no names mentioned), I find the usual fortnightly list.

Regarding the 'matches' which are thousands of miles apart. Not only is this quite possible where large families have moved or emigrated and people have not been told of their origins - but if you read what GR says, you will find that they have always said they will search for NAMES in other members' trees - they have never promised to find PLACES. It would be nigh on impossible to write programs to do this, as so many of us write the places differently. If the name and year of birth match, they are fulfilling their promise. If you are so sure that there is no match because the place of birth doesn't match - ignore it! On the other hand, one of you could be wrong and might learn something from it!

That's true-the wrong places ones ,with the correct name and birth year don't bother me .I actually found first cousins for a Barlow whose parents had emigrated out here from Shropshire or Staffordshire,so I don't have a problem with them.I do have a problem with approx. 30 names saying that they have 1 HM with you, eg Carole (1),John(1),Maureen (1),David (1),
and when you click on View, beside the name,in expectation that there will be a HM,you get a notice that you have NO match with this member's tree.I have had a few previously, but nowhere near this many, and it's frustrating to get the same result for nearly every name with (1) beside it,although a few names did have HM's beside them,so I couldn't afford to ignore any,in case one was a genuine one.

Perhaps I should have realised that things had gone pear-shaped when I got a list of 2 lots of supposed Hot Matches which bore no relation to any names in my tree!

Generally, though, I am happy with my Hot Matches, and I will continue to take notice of them.
