You really need to give a bit of information before anybody can help, e.g. your grandfather Jo Bloggs b 1920 in Timbucktoo m Mary Whoever b 1923 in Wherever. Give where and when they married. If you havent gone any further back than that couple then people will know where you can look for help.

Agree entirely with Huia. Also if you click on the Trying to Find board words on your left hand side you will be able to see what information other people provide, and how the research is done and what you can find yourself.

Holly, take just one line, i.e. your Mother's or Father's. How far have you got back? Grandparents? Gt grandparents?

Thomas Lambsdown, he was born in 1811 and died in 1855 due to a fever. I do not know where he was born but i know that he was a Bedstead Maker, Journey Man. He was married to a Mary Russon, who i know nothing about and I only know about one of their children James Lambsdown, who was my Great Great Grandfather. x

Thankyou so much, but do you have any ideas why the surname would of changed ? x

 Sue In Yorkshire.

Sue In Yorkshire. Report 26 Mar 2010 01:12

Holly it is wrote down by the Enumerator as Lamsdown not Lambsdown.

Huia

Huia Report 26 Mar 2010 07:12

Holly, many people were illiterate, wouldnt have known how their name was spelled, and the enumerator would write it down the way it sounded, so you need to always check for alternative spellings for first and last names, and then there are some people who might have been christened Thomas but called themselves William, just to make things awkward for us. So dont say 'he cant be mine as his name was different'. We all learn these things as we get wiser in this business.

CarolB. The Ancestry image has the name spelt Lamsdown. It is transcribed as Lamsdows which is an incorrect transcription. Also I saw his occupation as Bedstead maker. On the image it is written as Beadstead maker. That too could be a spelling error.

On FMP the census name is Lansdown Bedstead maker.

I am getting no where bringing the name up on FreeCen. I will go try some more variations.

Holly Report 26 Mar 2010 15:34

I am pretty sure that the census is the correct one even with the names being spelt differently because the address given was Little Hill Street and Thomas' place of death was Little Hill Street. x

Also does anyone know how i can trace the rest of the family ? x

 Sue In Yorkshire.

Sue In Yorkshire. Report 26 Mar 2010 23:17

Holly,

What you need to do now is have a look at the 1851 census I gave you, then get up the 1861 census to see who is missing from the 1851.you know Thomas snr has died 1855.

I think that you will find that between the 2 censuses there will be Mary Lambsdown and William Lambsdown missing off the 1861.

Now if you get FREEBMD up and have a look for their marriages,Mary married in 1860 and William married in 1861.

With Mary you will be able to get the answer on who she married on the 1861 census.
For William it will have to be the 1871 census

What you have to do is get a census up then cross match who is missing off the census with either marriages or deaths.
